MRI scan result waiting times

Hi all,

I had a small bowel MRI going on 6 weeks ago now on the NHS, my gp sent me down the 2 week pathway and I have a large mass on my lower right abdomen, pain and my bowels just haven't been right for a while.

First qu... did anyone experience a bizarre reaction to the scan/ drink they had to take or iv drugs given? I spent 2 days in bed with severe pain all the way down my rhs!

Second qu.... I thought I would be receiving my results within 2 weeks of having my scan (at the longest... and that's even if nothing was found!) I don't want to bother my gp, so have tried going via the secretary of the locum GI consultant who put me forward for the scan to chase the results. I know it has been 'reported' so it has been looked at by a radiologist, but that is all I have been told. The secretary said she would press the consultant to send a letter?

I love the NHS and understand waiting times are extended at the moment, but I'm finding this wait absurd. I am also anxious as I have had results go 'missing' in the past.

  • Hello Llima and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry for how long you've been waiting for your results. Due to the pandemic this does, sadly, seem to be quite common now but hopefully your results will come through soon.

Don't be afraid of getting in touch with your GP to find out what's going on as that is what they are there for and I'm sure they will do all that they can to give you an update.

I'm sure some of our members will offer their support and advice to you soon but I hope this information will help with your anxiety in the meantime.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • I had a reaction to the MRI dye but it only lasted the day. I was projectile vomiting. I'm still waiting on full MRI results after 3.5 weeks but i have an appointment next week now. I hope you get good news and you hear quickly.
