Mri scan for invasive lobular breast cancer

14 Jan 2022 23:53 in response to Moseley

Hi,

I was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer in 2019. It's renown for not showing up on a mammogram and even ultrasound scans don't get the full view, that is why you will be going for an MRI scan. There is a fantastic Facebook page for people with lobular breast cancer. https://www.facebook.com/groups/linkinglobularladies/?ref=share All the members have/had lobular breast cancer.
They told me that my tumour was 19mm from the ultrasound. MRI showed it was 35mm.

I had surgery - which was a latissimus dorsi flap procedure, this is where an oval flap of skin, fat, muscle, and blood vessels from your upper back is used to reconstruct the breast. This flap is moved under your skin around to your chest to rebuild your boob. Most lobular breast cancers result in a mastectomy but my hospital had a surgeon who specialist in this surgery. I had an oncotype test done on my tumour which came back with a score of 16 so didn't need chemo. My surgeon told me lobular cancer doesn't really respond well to chemo. I then had 15 sessions of radiotherapy and am now on tamoxifen xx

You are at a tough part of your journey but I found talking to people on here really helped. I can see my support buddy, Christine has also commented on your thread. I found being able to chat to people who were going through or had been through similar journeys, so helpful.

The CT is because the area is large I am at higher risk that the cancer may have spread. Also need a blood test before CT. The MRI also shows an area for further investigation. The scans are to make sure they have all the information to agree a treatment plan rather than start and then have to change. Waiting is hard but I am treating each test/scan as another step on the path closer  to the end goal. Hope all goes well for you x
