Moving to NHS

My wife has been treated privately for Metastatic Lung cancer (secondary brain) as we were lucky enough to have had private health care as part of her employment, her employment officially ends in April. We hope to move to a new home away from our current town and county within the next few months, I know that I will need to arrange her NHS care package where we intend to live, she also has a chest port fitted as there were difficulties with her veins, is it best to simply contact our original NHS contact prior to the private referral and ask them to help with this or should I arrange appointments with an intended new local doctor? - not really quite sure where to proceed.

  • Hello John .

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's situation.

Hopefully others who have face the same decision will come along shortly to advise you on when it comes to moving from private to the NHS.

Also, you might want to contact the NHS directly to see if they can help guiding you through the process.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

Sorry to read about your wife’s condition and situation.

I’m no expert on the subject but as the father of a young man with a severe long term condition I know how stressful the move from one NHS area to another can be - especially now that local GP-led CCGs commission NHS services.

Hopefully your move is within one of the home countries (Scotland, Wales, NI or England) and not between them as this would further complicate things.

First of all you’ll need to talk to your current NHS GP (or register with one) in the area where you currently live. He or she will be able to advise about whether and how care can be transferred back to the NHS from the private sector and how care can then be transferred between areas. When my son moved we had to register him with a GP in his new area which we were unable to do until he was a local resident and the new GP made a new referral to the new NHS Trust who then assessed his needs as if he was being diagnosed for the first time.

My local CCG has published a guide on private and NHS care boundaries - the two CCGs involved in your wife’s case will have similar (but not necessarily identical) rules. www.warringtonccg.nhs.uk/Defining the boundaries between NHS and Private Healthcare.pdf

Page 10 of this next document outlines the process for moving between CCGs

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Dave many thanks, that seems the logical way around, I want to start this asap to ensure that my wife gets all of this sorted out between treatments. We have an appointment with the Consultant next week and then i will get the process under way.

    Thanks again and best regards

    John

  • Thanks Renata, appreciated your response.

  • No worries - in my son’s case he moved from Scotland to England which may have been why he had to be re-diagnosed. Hopefully you won’t have that stressful complication.
