Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression

hi guys.

my Aunt has been in a nursing home since 2014 due to end stage emphysema and she was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer which was being contained by a tablet...or so we thought.

3 weeks ago she was taken to hospital with a copd flare up and respiratory sepsis. While doing bloods they noticed something and done some scans. Turns out the cancer has spread to her liver and bones including her spine. She has a tumor on her spine that has fractured her T3 vertebrae and is pressing on her spinal cord.

weve not been told how long she has so we don’t know what to expect. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences?

  • Welcome to our forum, Tamz.

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt's situation.

Hopefully you will get to chat with some of our members who have had similar experiences and they will tell you their stories and offer advice but in the meantime, I thought you might find this page from our website with information on spinal cord compression and cancer interesting to read.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Tamz; sorry that you aunt is so ill and that are feeling a bit lost.  I cannot say I have had any similar experiences but hope you won't mind my coming to talk to you anyway.  Has your aunt been kept in hospital or returned to the nursing home?   I don't know how receptive your aunt now is and whether she is able to receive and make decisions about information she is given - if she is fully conversant with her situation she may share the information with yourselves as presumably she did  when her tumour was diagnosed?  If this is not the case then you need to speak to whoever is managing her care.  I know I am making guesses here so sorry if I am wide of the mark.

This must  be a very distressing time for your family and (again I am guessing) it sounds as though you are all pulling together to do your best for your aunt.  If you are feeling lost and distressed then please continue to come to this forum.  Also you can at any time ring the nurses here (Freefone 0808 800 4040 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) to discuss your aunt's treatment or anything else that is bothering you.  Best wishes. Annie

  • Thanks for your response. She is now in the Hospice/care home for some physio and rehab. They felt it unfair to confine her to bed due to the T3 fracture for what time she has left. She has her full faculties thank god and has advised the hospice drs that they can deal with me regarding her medical condition. This has bee a relief as her and my uncle do not understand things and do not take them on board. She also has end stage emphysema so that is going against her.
