Metallic taste.

Has anyone suffered with a metallic taste. I havnt eaten properly since March,  every time I try I heave.

Any help would be appreciate...

Thank you

  • I've not eaten properly since last October - incapable of eating most things. Not necessarily a metallic taste but definitely altered taste as well as lack of appetite.

Started off I could eat egg butties; not so after a couple of weeks. Then beef big soup; that went. I could eat ice cream, rice puddings (only a particular sort), jam roly-poly and custard, chicken soup and mushroom soup.

Cachexia (weight loss) kills 40-60% of cancer sufferers, according to one report I read, so I determined to eat what I could when I could.

Due to the cancer and subsequent sepsis/abdominal surgery, I lost 3 and 1/2 stone but due to a diet of chicken soup, ensure protein drinks (precribed) and the odd meal of fish or potatoes I'm managing to maintain weight.

If necessary, I'll live on this diet for the rest of my life but I try to include an extra food periodically.

I have had the occasional meal out, which I've just picked at. Some days I get a hunger for something that turns out tasting entirely wrong, if I can eat any of it at all.

But I keep trying to get those calories in. And remember, a spoonful is better than none at all.

Weirdly, sometimes I dream of tasting my illness and have to get up and clean my teeth.

Not sure any of the above helps but I can say you're not alone.

    Best regards

    Taff.

  • Thanks raff it's good to hear your not alone xx
  • Shazatcross, i had this when i was on capecetabine. Alarmingly i went totally of coffee and chocolate ! my kids easter eggs were safe for one year.

Definitely speak to your GP and try to get the protien drinks, as this will help keep some of your input levels on track.  then just experiment with whatever you can and try to sneak little bits of protein in. For example, im ok with cheese based pasta, but i'll sneak in a bit of salmon, or chicken just to ensure i'm getting some goodness.  Or if you do have a vegetable or fruit you can eat, base the meals around this.

But definitely ask for help. i also got an appointment with the NHS dietician and they were really helpful too.

    Best of luck
