Melanoma under toenail?

Hello, I've had a black mark under my toenail for the last three months and contacted my GP today. She referred me to a dermatologist to check if it's benign or melanoma. Does anyone have experience about what I can expect from the appointment? Will they take a biopsy?
thank you in advance

  • Hi Svenja,

There are several threads on here from people who are going through/have gone through the same problem - if you search Subungual melanoma or Nail Melanoma in the Search Forum bar at the top of the page it should find most of those threads.

My melanoma was a mole on the skin so it's a little different when you have your referral appointment. It may be that, if the dermatologist can't rule out anything else, they will either arrange for you to have the nail removed for a biopsy of the skin underneath or they may even do it at your appointment. The other posts on the forum will give you a better idea. Subungual melanoma is very rare (it accounts for only 5% of melanoma diagnoses) so hopefully your nail is fine. Good luck & please let us know how you get on.
