Mastectomy with implant reconstruction

I'm due to have a skin/nipple sparing bilateral mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction in March after chemotherapy for breast cancer. I would like to know peoples experiences on this operation, recovery, do they feel abdormal or is it something you get used to? I've also got the BRAC1 gene and it would be helpful if anyone has this and has also gone on to have ovary removal and can give me any advice / info on how youve managed with the early menopause.

  • Hello Loukell123

I've had a look and I can see that we've quite a few posts where people who have had immediate reconstruction have mentioned it in the posts. If you use the forum search function to look for "immediate reconstruction" you'll be able to read through those posts.

I'm unsure if we've any members currently active who have been through this procedure as many hospitals are still not offering immediate reconstructions due to the situation with Covid19. Hopefully, if there is anyone on the forum who has been through this then they will see your post and share their experiences with you.

I'm unsure how old you are but if you're under 45 then I'd also suggest having a look for the Younger Breast Cancer Network or have a look at this page on the Breast Cancer Now website. I'm sure you'll be able to connect with others who have been through similar experiences both with reconstruction and the BRCA1 gene.

I hope this helps and that all goes smoothly with your surgery.

    Best wishes,
