Mastectomy bras!

I am going for mastectomy on my left breast with reconstruction using my tummy, also having reduction on breast. I'm a size 38f at the moment and always use wired bras, but I have now been told I have to buy non wired or sports bras. I've bought 2 sports bras one from George Asda and one from Matalan but these don't give me much support at all I may as well not be wearing one lol. Have any of you got some great recommendations of bras for after this surgery...Please spam me all different ones and where from please??

Thank you

  • Hi danny ...

Asda have more masectomy bras on line ... they are really pretty and so comfortable and a great price .. now I am a 36 D D ... and like you always worn underwire bras ... sinse masectomy, for day time marks and sparks have a bra that's really comfortable and pretty ... and I never went back to underwire ...

    I thought I couldn't live without underwire now I wouldn't go back ... Chrissie

  •  Amoena bra’s are lovely, some of the m and s range is pretty good as well.

  • Thanku, definitely going to check marks n Spencer bras out as lots of ppl recommend them.

Using Asda ones already, not very supportive lol

    Hi Danni,

I had a double mastectomy 8 years ago, but couldn't have reconstruction. I was a size 44 C. I now need a pocketed bra for my prostheses. I agree that Asda's bras don't have a great deal of support. The cheapest and best I have found are from M & S. Their Total Support range are pretty good - maybe not the sexiest, but give a decent support. You can also look online at Royce, Amoena and Nicola Jayne. Some of these are prettier, but more expensive.

You will probably be glad of a softer, less supportive bra immediately after your surgery and will need more support once you heal up. If you are getting reconstruction, you are lucky, because you won't need a pocketed bra, you will be able to use any normal bra which offers decent support. I personally found the shape of some sports bras rubbed and I initially looked for the least stitching possible in my first few bras post-surgery.

When are you due to have your surgery? I hope all goes well for you. Please let us know how you get on.

We are alays here for you.

    Kind regards,

I bought 2 M&S bras today, there sports bras but alot more supportive and was only £29.50 for 2pk. So I'm leaving it for now and see how I am after surgery then may get some better ones, but at min I've got drawer full of bras all my wired ones n sets then the Asda n Matalan ones now these lol.

Having surgery on 26th March,  bit nervous about pain I'll be in but know it'll be so worth it to get this cancer out of me!

I'm really sorry you couldn't have recon,  did they tell you why?

    Thank you for well wish

    Take care

    Hi Danni,

I have some pretty lengthy scarring from previous, non-cancer related surgery. This leaves me without a donor site, as I have had a double mastectomy and would need reconstruction on both sides.

I also have a problem with general anaesthetics, having previously stopped breathing under anaesthetic. I have a small mouth and a very narrow windpipe and now have to use fibre-optic intubation. This means that I have to stay awake until I can swallow the camera down without coughing and, this is not always easy. The length of time needed to carry out a double reconstruction is also a worry, so it seemed prudent not to push things too far.

I hope that all goes well for you on 26th March. Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

Thanku for your advice. I'll see how get on with Bridget Joan pants lol. Got enough bras to start my own shop at min so will wait n see how swollen I am after op.

Can I just ask, what was the pain like after your surgery? Think that's what I'm mostly worried about and walking as I live in 3 storey house with toilet on ground floor and 2nd floor so either way I have alot of stairs to contend with...did u find walking an issue?

    Thanks

  • Aww thanku that's put my mind at ease abit.

Yeah we got siderails at both sides as an elderly couple lived in house before us.

Just want it done and dusted now lol

    Thanku

    Hi Danni,

I would agree with DBird about your operation. I had a double mastectomy and found it a bit tender the first two days in hospital. I was fine after that and, left hospital to do my weekly shopping. I live in a bungalow, so didn't have to worry about stairs, despite needing 2 new knees at the time.

I shall be thiking of you on 26th.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Aww thanku Jolamine, really nice of you!
