Making a decision re: reconstruction surgery

Following having breast cancer on 2 occasions I had a mastectomy in 2013.

I am now happy well and back to normal.

Reconstruction surgery has been suggested - taking tissue from my stomach and transplanting it on to my chest making a new breast - amazing!!

However the op takes approx 10hrs, I will have a scar on my clear stomach, be in hospital for a week and will need to recover.

I am usually an extremely decisive person and this is the first time I can remember being unable to make a decision.

Help !!

Hi Dawson .......  I am so pleased to see that you are now cancer free and well and happy.  I guess reconstruction is a very personal choice and you need to look at things in the longterm and decide if it is important to you to have a breast or not.  Some ladies are devastated to lose their breast and others embrace their 'new' look by having tattoo's on the scar etc.  To a much lesser degree its the same when I have had chemo - some people have the cold cap because the thought of losing their hair devastates them and others dont even think of it as an issue.

Think hard about what is important to you personally and if you think that your opinion may change as time elapses.  If you are content with the way your are now and think things will stay that way, then just get on with enjoying your life.  Let us know what you decide and best wishes for a long and happy life whatever your decision x
