Lumpectomy, radiation and now liver cyst

I am struggling this evening as I have just had a call from the hospital. I am into day 3 of radiation after a lumpectomy and the hospital just called to answer one of my questions from radiation but also said they saw a liver cyst on the scan this morning. Nothing to worry about ! and we will tell you more if we know anything else on Monday when you come for your radiation otherwise will see you Tuesday after the final radiation.  Not sure what to do all weekend now as I am thinking the worse. Anyone else had similar. Thanks.

  • This is an absolute pet peeve of mine. I had it done to me years ago, and my wife had it done to her at 6pm last Friday. She got a call from the nurse to say when she is in (yesterday, as the case was) getting an US to confirm scar tissue, something was highlighted on her yearly mammogram, and they wanted her to redo it yesterday. Why tell someone that on a Friday? She had to sweat it out over the long weekend. Easy for someone else to state "don't worry, it's nothing", but you know yourself now, it doesn't work like that.

I once got a call on a Friday evening, too, just after i had had bloods taken. I just missed the phone as i was coming in from work. Listened to the message and the doctor saying he had made an appointment to discuss the bloods first thing Monday.  I was climbing the walls all weekend. Why would a gp do and say all of that if it was nothing? Turns out, that's exactly what he wanted to tell me, all was good. Whilst good news obviously, i was livid about it.

About you, why didn't they just tell you all this on Monday? Makes no sense. I assume that comes from the doctors, not the nurses. It's insane.

  • Thanks so much for your reply, I know seems insane -like you and your wife I can't think of anything else now. So happy for you that you were ok. But why not say all was good about your tests...Wish I had never answered the call really at 4 pm Friday just after finishing work and after radiation this morning. It's going to be a long weekend.

    HI Shellie,

    Talk about bad timing!

I am not a doctor, but all I can say is that most liver cysts are benign and all that is usually done is to monitor them for a while. You may find that the doctors want to do further tests to ensure that the cyst is not cancerous, but the majority of them are not and people are often unaware of them, until they show up on ultrasound.

Try your best not to let this spoil your weekend. Remember that no amount of worry will change anything. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on at your radiotherapy appointment on Monday. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I have no idea why he didn't just say that. Still can't wrap my head around why a doctor would even do something like that. Never had a gp contact me about bloods before or after that. Usually a receptionist during the week, not last thing Friday.

Now, i ask never to get results, dropped bombs or inane calls on Fridays. I clearly state, that if i'll survive 'til Monday, I don't want to hear from them or hear any "new" developments last thing on a Friday. That call actually caused a small phobia. That was 15 years ago.

I could rant about this all day, lol. I know how you're feeling, and it ain't nice at all.

  • Hi Jolamine, thanks for your reply.
Like most I have probably googled too much and feel the worst now. Yesterday at 3 ish I felt great - 2 radiations to go and still excercising and working. Today I am the opposite. You are right about the worry so will go out and try to take my mind off it all. Thanks again x

  • Awr thank you for reply. Yep not good this waiting now.
That is such a good idea about telling docs you don't want to hear on a Friday. Think all this has done same for me now argggggh.

  • Hi jolamine

Same here I have been told the same things as I have a cyst on my liver or kidney.  I can't remember which one of them. But been told nothing sinister , just some of the things appear to be seen on CT scan, they'll just monitor to see if there is any changing

  • Hi Shellie,

I had a scan for something years ago and was told I had a cyst on my liver. I'm still here 20 years later...I can't remember why I had the scan but I do remember those words! I said how do you know it's just a cyst and they said because it looks like a cyst. It'll be nothing to worry about, relax xx

  • Hi Samokha,

I only discovered that I had a cyst on my ovary, when I had a CT scan for my cancer. I have never had any bother from it and I was advised that I don't need any treatment for it.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks so much. I have just seen everyone's reply - has made me feel so much better knowing this.  Roll on tomorrow for the answer when I go for radiation xx
