Lumpectomy Not Long Completed

Hi,

My Nan  at the age of 58 has recently been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and is due for surgery on the 17th of this month, me and my mum have concerns as expected but not so much about the cancer as it has been beaten alot in later stages in our family, the thing that worries us most is her condition, she is very overweight and I know that it increases chances of things not going to plan but I wondered just how much? Is there anyone similiar with expirience whether it be them or someone in their family and can help settle some nerves or expect us for what to come?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi there ... sorry to hear bout your nan ... when I had my mastectomy, I had lots of medical conditions ... and was worried my body would be too weak to cope ... but the op is so much advanced now .. and because of this , I asked to be kept in hosp for a few days as I knew my blood pressure could plummet quickly as well .. so they listened to me and kept me in, and true to form at 3 a.m it happened and I was whisked back to theatre... I came round from that full of beans and no pain , only where lymph nodes were taken ... and others on here who have had mastectomy said the same ... they were all surprised how it wasn’t as bad as expected...

so I would ask them the same , if she could stay in a while longer as you are worried and it would put your mind at ease ... hope it goes o.k ... thinking of you all .. Chrisie xx ️

  • Thanks Chris, she has her pre operation appointment on the 10th then surgery on the 17th just glad its at an early stage.

I just get real bad anxiety as does my mum making us think of the worst happeening.

  • Fingers crossed for you and your mum .... this is the hardest part ... leading up to the day ... so hand in hand , you can do this ...together... you can ask dr about your worries of her weight, so they can put your minds at ease ... so hang on in there and please keep in touch ... and if your mum needs a chat you can tell her there’s a fare few of us on here all at different stages and mine was a grade 3 and I’m still here to tell the story  ... big hug to you and mum ... Chrisie xx

  • Thank you,

She not long got home from her pre operation appointment where they said they are going to go ahead with surgery next week sometime, they said that they wouldn't operate if neccesary whcih slightly scares me but obviously she's in great hands.

  • Hi there, not long to wait now then... try to keep her busy and distracted, as this waiting before was my scariest part ... looks promising as she’s only grade one, mine was a 3 so fingers crossed for her ... tell her it really isn’t as bad as she prob thinks ... one of our ladies on here was home having a cup of tea that day ... so try to put her mind at rest (a little) is she having lymph node taken , coz I found that was more tender then scar ... and she must take it easy for a little while and do the arm exercises... please keep in touch and I’d love to know how it goes ... how lucky she is for you to care so much ... bet she’s really proud of you ... so take care Chrisie x

  • Yes it is lymph node being taken, she's aware of needing to relax and as she doesn't work for any big company so theirs no rush for her to get off her feet at all afterwards, it's just those few hours in surgery that have us concerned with anasethic and the issues that could have as she's quite large.

Of course will keep updated hopefully it will be on a positive note.

  • Thanks for keeping in touch ... please let me know how she goes after op ... tell her someone, somewhere is thinking of her and sending a big hug ... take care josh.. Chrisie x

  • Her Op went as well as it possibly could of, she is now staying the night and will recieve the results in two weeks to see if she needs Radiation, thank god she found it early, and thank you very much for calming nerves beforehand, ill make sure to stick around with updates Radiation or not, the surgery was the only thing that had us worried and thats been a success so far.

  • What good news ... hope she feels as well as I did ... though I did get an infection after ... so make sure she takes it easy after ... I was sore / tender under my armpit.. where lymph node was taken .. and it takes a while to get back to normal .. I put a tiny soft pillow under my arm and it really helped .. she will probably get an exercise leaflet on how to slowly move it ... if she had a lymph node removal ... they do that to check if it was contained...

tell her to enjoy the rest and let you all wait on her ... saying that to move around is good , just not house work or lifting , changing beds etc ... so it’s spoil mum time ... give your mum a big hug from me ... tell her it’s funny when you get your first falsy boob (if she had total mastectomy like me ... I was so chuffed as it was really comfortable but when I said to the lady and her hubby in the next bed what they thought .. he said I should change my name to one hung low ... it had slipped while I wasn’t looking ... we had such a laugh in there ... it did help that I’m 63 so it wasn’t such a big deal for me .. and my little grand daughter asked me how I was going to feed babies if I had one ... bless her as she’s only 5 ... so it is possible to keep it light for your mum and it helps to cope ... or it did me ...

let me know how she goes ... big hug Chrisie xx ️

  • No it was only a lumpectomy and her lymph nodes have been sent off to see results. I am not sure what those results mean, is it possible that it will actually come back that it has spread and further needs to be done or is radiation the furthest it could go? Thanks for all the wishes shes feeling well,
