Lump under chin

Hello I am a 17 male, I have recently  discovered a lump under my chin  although you can not physically see the lump, you can feel it. My glands also have lumps but I feel like that’s just swelling on my glands. I recently have had a cold and a sore throat that I thought was tonsillitis but as it  had went away I now question of it was tonsillitis. My throat tends to get sore now and then. Iv also recently had chest pains too. I’m just worried as I have (stupidly) been googling everything just to put my mind and ease but now I’m left scared.

  • Hello Melly5902 and welcome.  You have learned the hard way that there is no benefit in looking up symptoms on the internet.  Think about it.  A real flesh-and-blood doctor looks, feels, asks questions before s/he can even start to make a stab at a diagnosis.  Anyone posting online diagnostics include every possibility no matter how remote or unlikely - they have no way of doing the essential actions involved in making a diagnosis.  We say here that Dr Google is a quack who should have been struck off long ago.  Once you start worrying about things everything seems more pronounced and you feel worse and worse.  I would recommend that you visit your GP who can give you a proper examination and diagnosis.  Then if there is any infection for instance you can get it properly resolved.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting on our forum.

I'm afraid I won't be able to say what the lump under your chin might be, but it is most likely that is it not anything serious. Cancer in your age group is very rare but we normally suggest that if anyone finds a lump or something that is new for them they go and get it checked out by their GP. The doctor will be able to complete a full examination and do any referrals if they are deemed necessary.

It might also be a good idea to tell your mum or dad or another trusted adult about your concerns. Do try to make an appointment to see your doctor soon.

I hope this has been helpful.

    Best wishes,

    Abi

  • Hi Melly,

i am just coming across your post while I am searching for possible answers for my 17yr old son. He just came to me with a hard lump under his chin.

He is concerned so I will take him to the doctor but I am curious to know if you found a cause for your lump?

    Thank you so much

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

As this thread was from a few months ago we thought we would drop you a line, in case you don't hear back from anyone else.

I am sorry to hear your son has a lump under his chin. Lumps and bumps can appear for lots of different reasons and most won't be anything serious. However it is always best to get these things checked out by a doctor to be on the safe side, so I am pleased to hear you are going to take him to see a doctor.

I hope all goes well. The doctor will be able to examine the lump and arrange more tests if necessary.

Please get back if you have any more questions or if you would like to speak to a nurse the number is 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday 9am till 5pm.

    Take care,

    Naomi

  • Hi and thanks for your post

As the previous post was a long time ago you may find that you don't get a reply.

Lots of people find lumps or raised nodes around their neck or under the chin. The nodes can come up in response to infection or any inflammation even if it was a long time ago.

However, as everyone is different and no one here will be able to say what's causing your lump, it's always best to get checked out by the GP. They see lots of people your age with similar symptoms, so do give the surgery a call, especially as it will give you peace of mind knowing it's being looked at.

    All the best

  • Hello, I was just wondering if I should see a doctor because I just got the same lump under my chin area about 2-3 days ago.

Also do lumps mean you have cancer or could it be anything else?

    Thanks

  • Hello again,

Most lumps have straight forward medical explanations and are not cancer.

If you are worrying, then do speak with your GP who can advise you.

Unfortunately, we can't really diagnose, or tell you what it is, on this forum.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
