Lump under armpit

4 Apr 2020 08:22

Hi there,

I recently found a lump under my armpit. It is the size of a small marble. Due to the current situation with coronavirus I have not been examined by a doctor. I was able to talk to her via video call. She has prescribed antibiotics. I am really worried. It is not red or angry looking and is a firm lump to touch. Does anybody have similar stories to share?

Hi Lolstar,

I'm having a similar situation with a lump on the right side of my neck. I was examined by a doctor 6 weeks ago and she felt it was nothing sinister, but when she checked my throat it was red and inflamed. The lump is still there so I phoned the doctor on Monday and they prescribed a course of antibiotics as the infection may be more deep seated. I'm just waiting for the antibiotics to work, it's a 10 day course. I also had blood work done the last time and all came back normal. I had another blood test on Wednesday so will know the results on Monday. I understand completely how stressful and worrying it is.

I have the same problem lolstar I'm 20 years old I fount a swollen lymph node under my right armpit it's small moveable and feels firm I also have one on right side of my neck small moveable but feels softer so I'm freaking out I have had a body wide eczema flare up ongoing for at least 9 months without any antibiotics to ease the inflammation so I'm putting it down to that but I'm freaking out like you to cause google says lymphoma and stuff i do smoke aswell only for under a year but still scary especially when I'm very physically active all my life and drink tons of water daily i think it's best if we get antibiotics and see how that goes and I also think we need blood tests to make sure everything is fine you like me probably feel really healthy and fit but just to check would ease our minds hopefully the antibiotics work for you and I need to get some myself cause the stress is killing me hopefully they work and we're fine

Hi lolstar, I have found a lump under my armpit as well. Suspect it's a swollen lymph node. Did you get a better diagnosis from the doctor since your post? Would be great if you could provide an update. Thanks and take care.

Hey,

I am going through the same thing unfortunately, I found a random bump/lump on my armpit, no redness but it's hard, then I started to panic also I didn't notice it on any other days before, so it shocked me to find it appear spontaneously.

As usual, google doesn't help and puts anxiety at a mile.

hope it's nothing serious,

& hope you're okay x

How are you?

Last week I found a lump in my right armpit. It's round like a sphere, it feels like those small silver balls you used to secondary's cakes with. Remember those? They tasted vile haha. Anyway, it's just below the skin in my armpit, it isn't fixed inside the armpit wall or anything. I can get it between 2 fingers and wiggle it about and when I stretch the skin out it stretches with it.  I've been worried sick it's cancer because it doesn't hurt and is so firm.

Its been a week and it's not gone but it's not grown. I was hoping it would have started to shrink but it hasn't so much mines been racing. I'm crying ruling this. It's only small but it worries me. I even fiddled with it in front of a mirror and weirdly as i wiggle it side to side between my fingers you can see it's a white small ball just below the skin. It's the size of one of those small silver balls or a bit smaller than a petit pois pea.

I hope you're ok.

Hey,

You might not want to touch/ fiddle about with it so much, because it can probaly affect/infect or get worse otherwise. Just let your GP know asap, that's what I did, I know it's affects your mood and it's upsetting to look at but be positive you're not alone x

Hi all, first time posting on here. I found a lump under my armpit about two weeks ago. I phoned the doctor and he diagnosed a swollen lymph node or potential shaving infection. Well it's still there and it hasn't got smaller or bigger but I now can feel a couple more, directly under the skin. Where they are looks a little inflamed so it could be shaving related but I'm worried sick and think I should probably phone the doctor again.

22 May 2020 10:37 in response to lauraloo1983

Maybe ask for a phone call? See how that goes? I understand as its a worrying time. Hugs to you xxx I posted a thread about what I found in my armpit last night. A week ago I found a round ball in my armpit. Just below the skin not deep inside. It's a bit smaller than a petit pois oea. It reminds me of the silver balls you used decorate cakes with lol. Round and firm but wiggles between my fingers and isn't attached to the armpit deep inside. I'm monitoring it for a few weeks then have to see my GP I guess. I've no lump in my breast.

I understand how scary it is. I'd say yours sound like lymph nodes which could be raised if infection in the armpit. I know it's hard but try not to worry and see what your GP says xxx

22 May 2020 10:43 in response to Libbyd40

Thank you xxx Hope everything works out for you too. Mine is like if you stretch my skin it disappears, I can also feel the hair follicle through it if that makes sense?! The first one I felt hasn't got any bigger or smaller, like you it feels a bit like the silver balls you have on a cake. When I spoke to the doctor a couple of weeks ago he asked me if it was hot which it isn't and I don't have any lumps anywhere in my breast either. It's like I'm so worried about what they say I don't want to phone them again but I have to just suck it up. I've got two young kids it's just making me feel sick. It's only my husband and you guys I've told! I'm still working as well so it's a really hard time at the moment. Xxx

Lump under armpit

22 May 2020 10:50 in response to lauraloo1983

Oh you poor things. I have had infected hair follicles before down below and they grow hard lumps.

Mine is painless and a solid round ball I can wiggle between my fingers. It's the size and feel of one of those silver balls. I was worried about how hard it is. It feels so close to the surface like it's just below the skin. I'm trying to not touch it at all but I can't help but check and wiggle it between my fingers numerous times a day which I'm sure makes it feel bigger.

I'm also too afraid to ring my Gp about it again so I'm just monitoring it and will call her in 2 weeks if need be. Did your GP seem concerned? I honestly think yours sounds like small glands from maybe a hair follicle but call your gp maybe do a video call and see what she thinks then if she needs to see you explain your concerns. My gp used to say he would rather I came the the doctors than sat at home worrying for weeks on end, what's worse, second guessing and all the what ifs or getting to the gp for an answer that may reassure us.

22 May 2020 10:55 in response to Libbyd40

No he didn't sound overly concerned he just said it should go away in 2 weeks but it's been 2 weeks now and it's still there. It's weird as sometimes I can feel it and other times I struggle to find it. I've poked around under my armpit so much now I sometimes feel like I'm imagining there's more than there is if you know what I mean! I think I'm going to bite the bullet and phone the doctors next week. Let me know how you get on and if you speak to the doctor. Xxx

If it's not grown that's a good sign. I know what you mean, anxiety can play some nasty tricks on us and we imagine we can feel all sorts.

Let me know his things go next week xx

I found a lump in my armpit about three weeks ago. I finally saw a gp last week and was prescribed antibiotics. She seemed very positive these would clear it up. I have now completed the course and the lump is still there. I'm really worried now. We have a telephone consultation again tomorrow and I'm dreading it. How is everyone else?

Lump under armpit

26 May 2020 22:32 in response to Worried235

Has it grown at all? I've had mine 2 weeks now and it's not grown at all. Still the same small round ball, firm but it moves between my fingers when I hold it. Mines still the size of one of those small silver balls you'd decorate cakes with. So it's pretty small. I'm giving it another week or so before I get an appointment.

Let me know how you get on with your doctor. It's good your doctor was so confident and not concerned. I know how scary it is, I've the same anxiety xxxx

I felt like it reduced a little a few days into the antibiotics but I feel like it's bigger again now.

That's reassuring it did start to get smaller. Is it firm? How big does it feel?

Lump under armpit

26 May 2020 22:49 in response to Libbyd40
I was planning on getting mine checked this week but I don’t think mine has got any bigger. Sometimes I feel around and I can’t find it. If they only prescribed antibiotics they must be sure it’s nothing serious, did they say what they thought it was? I think sometimes if I feel mine a lot I forget how big it is and maybe you might think it hasn’t got any smaller but it has. Let us know how you get on with your GP. Xx

Lump under armpit

26 May 2020 23:55 in response to lauraloo1983

I said this to hubby. The more I feel it the bigger it feels. So I've had days of feeling it constantly and I swear it's made it swell up in the area. If I leave it a few days it often feels smaller. It may not be but it feels it.

Hi Worried.

How did your GP appointment go? I hope you're ok.

Lump under armpit

28 May 2020 14:48 in response to Libbyd40

It was a telephone appointment and I was very disheartened by the outcome. Without even seeing how the lump looks now I have been prescribed a second week of antibiotics (a different one this time). I asked repeatedly for someone to have another look but was told there was nothing more they would do until I had completeted the course of antibitiotics. I really feel that this is more serious than the gp thinks.

thanks for asking by the way!

Lump under armpit

28 May 2020 15:09 in response to Worried235

Oh I'm sorry. I understand your worries as I'm thinking the same and I'm trying to monitor mine without panicking, it's hard not to worry it's more serious. If your GP has felt it before that's reassuring because they'd surely not expect you to wait if they thought for one minute it needed checking over.

Mines painless  so if my GP gave me antibiotics I'd probably wonder if any point in taking them so i understand why you're disheartened. Do you have to go back after the course of antibiotics?

This is exactly what I have under my right armpit I’m 27 y/o..  I can put my fingers around it it doesn’t feel like it’s attached to anything does it ? , and it’s just like under the skin surface. no pain atall like one of those silver ball things that is correct but smaller then a pea. It doesn’t move either I’ve had mine now around 18 months even longer, I got checked out by  a dermatologist my dr referd me around 5 months ago. I forgot the name he called it but it isn’t dangerous. I am going to go back though just to put my mind at ease! I have the exact same lump under the skin in my groin to! Let me know what your G.P says please x

18 Jun 2020 00:14 in response to Court1992

Well after 6 long weeks and it not shrinking at all I noticed last Wednesday it felt maybe 20% smaller then within 3 days 85% smaller. It just suddenly shrunk. It's now tiny, about 10% left. I cried tears of relief.

I'm glad I just monitored it and didn't push myself to a hospital check but keep an eye on it, see what your GP thinks. I'm pretty sure mine was right that it was a cyst or something, painless and wriggly ball lump. Whatever it was it took a long time to change and reduce.

I really hope the same happens for you xx

did urs move underskin? my doesn’t but when I stretch my skin out it comes out with it. And I can fit my full fingers around it. Very strange I know and it’s hard. Yours in the only lump I’ve came across like mine, can I ask what medication you got put on , and what did your dr say it was? My dermatologist put me on medication I had  a allergy to it and didn’t go back more fool me!  Like I said I’ve had mine for 18 months X

Lump under armpit

18 Jun 2020 08:20 in response to Court1992

Mine was fixed but if I got it between 2 fingers I could wiggle it left and right between the fingers. The smaller it got then it became very moveable.

If you've had it so long maybe it's just a cyst or Lipoma. That's what I was told it could be. Sure your doctor will give you some reassurance. I hope it goes well xxx

Found a lump under armpit last week attached to muscle about the size of a golf ball if not slightly bigger. I won't go to GP as I have high blood pressure and won't take pills.

No pain unless I play with it.

My eldest son died from a brain tumour 3 years ago dad had cancer and is still here but would like to know what it is ?

Hi Stu,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your son. Your symptoms should be tested to check whether or not there is anything to worry about. Don't ignore your lump becase it's not painful - most breast cancers are not sore. You say that you won't go to your GP because you don't take the pills that have been recommended for you. This is just silly. Having dealt with cancer in the family for so long, you will know that the sooner it is caught the better the outcome is.

You only need to get a referral from your GP, then your care will be taken over by the breast clinic. It seems silly to prejudice your outcome just because of this. Do please think seriously about this and phone your GP on Monday morning.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

I found a lump under my arm 4 days ago, I’d say it’s as big as a big pea? Doesn’t move around and only hurts if I’m prodding around at it, I also found one on my neck the day after I found the one underneath my armpit although this one is about half the size and no pain at all! I have eczema and have had a flare up so unsure if it could be an infection! I phone the doctors yesterday and they said wait 7-10 days to see if it goes down and I asked about a possible infection and he said if it’s viral then no anti-biotics will be needed but with a bacterial you most likely will but then never said what one it could be and if a needed the anti-biotics! I took another picture today and going by the picture it looks slightly bigger but I don’t know if it’s maybe in my head as I am worrying about it

Hi ive also found a lump recently under my armpit but feels the size of a fifty pence piece, ive also gone for mammogram as ive just turned 50years old and within 4 days of having the mammogram ive been sent a letter for further testing, alarm bells started ringing as they said upto 14 days before I will get mammogram results,so this Monday 4th January I shall be getting the lump under my armpit examined and biopsy taken as well as further mammogram and scans on breast. I can't lie and say I'm not worried but sometimes I feel like the lump has disappeared but when I feel again its back.Strange I know it sounds and wonder if I'm over thinking about the lump.I can't feel no lumps in breast but do have a slight swelling on my breast bone and its the same side as my armpit lump xx

Hey I have the same problem, I'm only 14 though, so I have this lump under my armpit which I can also move around, it just feels like a ball, I noticed this just about a year ago but I was in lockdown, I haven't went to the doctors because I haven't really had any problems and due to covid i couldn't get any appointments, it hasn't grew in size, but it is kinda big and visible but I've been feeling fine for a whole year, when I move my left arm where the lump is it kinda hurts but not that much, just feels sensitive and it's very rare a girl my age would get cancer, I've searched everywhere on google about this but it's just scaring me, I have no problems with it but I just wanna know if it is dangerous, I really don't wanna go to the doctors, idk if this lump is a big deal or just nothing to worryabout, can you give any tips please or do you know anything that would at least provide relief and ease my thoughts about this?

Hi hope you don't mind me replying. I had the doctor today, I have a hard lump in my right underarm, its unmovable and if am honest and really worried. I have to go back in 2 weeks and try antibiotics for one week. If the lump is still there I will get referred to the breast clinic. My anxiety is through the roof.

@Allonmyleftside ‍ I found a lump under my right armpit in December. I was given antibiotics first and it didn't go. I had an ultrasound in March due to it not going and I felt it was getting bigger, I was told it was a 'benign lump'. I've also been to the breast clinic yesterday at my request as I wanted a second opinion and the radiologist said it was likely a lipoma and confirmed it did not appear to be anything sinister on the scan. The breast clinic was very thorough and I also saw the breast surgeon who checked my breasts. I was really worried like you and had already convinced myself I had cancer. It's easier said than done but please try not to google (I did this and scared myself silly) hope this helps a bit.
