Lump on one tonsil, tonsil cancer?

Hi, I was just after some advice as I'm suffering with severe anxiety over a lump I found on my tonsil 5 months ago. Doctors don't seem bothered by it and gave me antibiotics in case it was tonsillitis but the lump never went. And neither have my symptoms. I am now awaiting an appointment with ent but I feel sick to my stomach thinking I have tonsil cancer.
I have had frequent sore throats which I have most days to be fair, ear pain and redness, , neck pain , a constant clicking in throat when swallowing, difficulty swallowing sometimes, a cough that has been there for 2 years now, respiratory team have found no issues with my lungs which lead up to believe it's a throat issue, . I have numerous swollen lumps on my neck , which I have had ultrasounds for that have all came back as just swollen lymph nodes, but they seem to multiply and not go away. And even though the ultrasound doesn't show cancer can you still have cancer if the throat and it not show up on the ultrasound, clearly there is a reason for the reoccurring swollen lymph nodes so there must be an infection somewhere. The sonograoher even said so herself. Anyway my point is has anyone else gone through this and have any advice, because Google has diagnosed me with cancer (yes I know Google is the worst thing to do, but it seems all the throat cancer symptoms, I have) I'm a single mum to a 4 year old and I'm worried sick incase I have throat cancer :(

  • Hello epoly

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with some ongoing health concerns around your tonsils and swollen lymph nodes. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about what may be responsible for your symptoms.

I think that many of our members will understand how difficult this period of waiting for appointments, tests, and results can be. Hopefully, you won' have to wait too long for your appointment with the ENT team and they will be able to give you some answers and reassurance.

In the meantime, if you think it might help to chat things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and support that they can ahead of your appointment.

I do hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi , previous to my ent referral I had ultrasound next scan to check the lumps in my neck and they came back as just swollen lymph nodes but because they keep reoccurring and I've been getting more and more over the course of a few months they said it should be investigated.
I finally saw ent yesterday and they put a camera down my nose into my throat and said it isn't symmetrical and he wants me to go for an urgent Ct scan to see more than what he can see with the scope he used. I asked if it looked cancerous and he said he wasn't sure, and that the fact I had a visible lump on my tonsil that isn't symmetrical to the other side was concern enough for him to refer me urgently for a scan, which doesn't sound promising to me. I'm in such a state of panic.

  • Thank you for your response, I saw ent yesterday and the have referred me for an urgent Ct scan next week, he wasn't sure if it was cancerous or not. I'm so scared now, if he didn't think it was cancerous would he be referring me so urgently :(

  • Try not to panic have you had any biopsy done

  • No biopsy yet. It was my first ent appointment yesterday after havjng these issues for over 6 months. Assuming they will do ct and then see what that finds before they order more tests.
have you been in this situation before if you don't mind me asking, and what should I expect. I'm so scared and can't stop thinking of the worst , as I literally have every symptom of throat cancer.

  • Well don't want to scare you but yes

you should have a pet scan and biopsy before they can tell you if it's cancer

  • What symptoms did you have exactly ? And can it show on the Ct scan I have next week if it's possibly cancer?

when you say you don't want to scare me do you mean everything I've explained I have indicated cancer

  • No it might be nothing

but firstly do you smoke ?
i know actually what your going through as I goggled everything and was worried sick and still am

but yes I have been  diagnosed with tonsil cancer that  as spread to lymph nodes

but this doesn't mean you will have it

  • I cut down smoking a year back and only smoke two a day.

ah I know Googling is ruining my anxiety right now.

oh no I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I hope you are ok well as best as can be and they are able to treat it.  Can I ask did you have an ultrasound of the neck. As previous to my ent appointment I did and it didn't show cancer just lots of swollen lymph nodes. But can you still have throat cancer and it not show on the ultrasound. And will the Ct scan give me a better indication if it is that.
what were your symptoms? And what treatment plan have they got you on. Sorry for bombarding you with questions. I'm just so concerned. As I know you are too. How are you coping? This is such a scary time isn't it.
