Lump in right side of neck

Hi all

I am new to this so any advice any of you could give me i would really appreciate ...

I have had a lump in my neck (right side)for the last few months thats got bigger extreme tiredness but that is also part of the condition i have so hard to diffreciate i just thought it would go away but it hasnt it has got bigger,  I thought right i had better go and get this checked out im a 41 year old single mum that had a stroke in 2000 and made a good recovery and work full time but also got diagnosed with Lupus which i try to manage best way i can.

I went on Monday to the GP and he seemed a bit mithered told me to try not to worry but because of the condition i have he will refer me as it over 4 cm along with the symptoms i have..  I got a call from the hospital on weds for me to go at 9 am next weds the consultant i am seeing is head and neck cancer specialist at the ENT dept.

For the first time now i am mithered..  has anyone else been in this situation.

What happens from here is it all delt with pretty quickly?? ANY advice will be truly greatfuly appreciated.

  • Hi Mand41,

3 weeks ago I found a lump in my neck.  I immediately went to my GP who referred me to ENT consultant under the two week rule.  I was petrified, I thought it was an infection and have antibiotics.

I paid privately as it was quicker and saw a lovely consultant.  He felt my lump and said it was a reactive lymph node and it will eventually go down, even told me the size with his fingers.  Two days later I saw my dentist for a routine checkup and he felt the lump said it's a deep lymph node but definately mobile and just keep an eye on it for the next couple of months.

Until the lump goes I won't be happy but I feel more reassured.  I hope that helps x

  • Thank you Kernow200 for responding to my post.

I am really hoping it is something similar to that and nothing major but i can help put worry. Did they not do any test at the ENT just so i know what to expect when i go???

  • I had a sinus operation so was expecting him to look up nose  down throat and send me to have a scan on lump.  When I walked in all the equipment was there but just by feeling it he was adamant of what it was.  But he checked all my neck.

My friend came with me and she has lymphoma and she said to me he was 100% sure just by feeling it.  Apparently neck cancer is his speciality.  They know what to feel for.  She said  for her lump, they felt all around and was saying it felt hard and needed a scan.

I won't say don't worry cos you will but I have spoken to a few people and it's very common to have lumps.  But have them checked out to be sure.  Your doing the right thing and Wednesday will be here soon enough.  My biggest mistake was Dr google, I wish they hadn't x

  • Thank you for all of this it helps to know all this information.

It started off only tiny but now you can see the lump i really didnt think anything of it at first.. its only because its gotten bigger and harder the tiredness the itching of my skin and the lump to the point you can grab it i thought i had better go.

I think i will feel much better come weds the doctor im seeing specialises in Head and neck cancer so will see at the min just feel like a massive weight on my shoulders.

  • Hi Amanda, does your lump move?  I tried everything to distract myself but it was hard. I was feeling all sort of emotions.

I don't know much about lupus or any side effects.  Does that cause lumps?   And have you got anyone to go with you?

  • Hi Fiona,

No it doesnt move just getting bigger ... i am feeling that way myself at the min trust me..

Lupus is an autoimmune disease i got diagnosed with it when i had the stroke. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs.

It can do but not to the extent i have this one they more or less are like little swellings this isnt like that thats why it got me a bit mithered so i went to the GP.

Yes my mum is coming with me

  • Hi Amanda,   I think they will give you an ultrasound with your history.  Which is not a bad thing.    Hopefully they will do it there and then, which will save you some more waiting.

    Try to relax xx
