Lump in lymph gland and tonsil

Hi I am new and a bit confused as I just had my biopsy and got diagnosed with cancer and the lump in my neck is a secondary and the primary they think is in my tonsil. I have to go for a CT scan on Wednesday and the following week see the specialist and oncologist I am not sure what I want to ask as I am in a bit of a stunned stage. I presently work and don't know if this will stop me working as at my age if this takes a while to cure then at my age I ain't getting another job lol. Can anyone advise me on things I might ask when I see the specialist in about ten days and has anyone had this before ?

  • Hello Davyellie61

I just wanted to post to wish you well ahead of your CT tomorrow. Hopefully the clinical team will get all the information they need from the scans to make a complete diagnosis and be able to plan the next steps.

We have quite a number of members here on the forum who have had tonsil cancer. They're a supportive group and I'd really encourage you to post on this thread and introduce yourself. IN particular, have a look for a link in that thread to a personal blog written by [@RadioactiveRaz]‍. I know that many people who have been diagnosed with tonsil cancer have found Hazel's record of her journey to be really helpful.

Thinking ahead to your appointment next week, I'd suggest giving our team of nurses a call. They'll be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice and information that they can along with helping you think about some of the questions you may want to ask at the appointment. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch over the next few weeks Davyellie61 and let us know how you get on. We'll do our best to support you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, I completed my treatment 2 weeks ago so still living it :) and have a fair way to go.

I sent you a friend request and wld be happy to chat but as per other replies, the other thread has lots of info.

Everyone is different but happy to share my recent experience.

  • Hi Davy it's unlikely you'll be able to work all the way through it does friend what you do. But the first few weeks aren't usually too bad then whst youmsy hit the wall and painkillers can take over your life. But like we all say we are all different   Technically the lymph nodes aren't secondary cancers they are doing what lymph nodes do they are holding the cancer cells I had 7 lymph nodes affected but nothing had spread to any other organs.
the primary eill more than likely ne tonsillar

dont stress keep off google as well.

  • Hi Hazel

Is it really 4 years?! You're right...it's scary how time can go so quickly. And yet when we're in the first stages of waiting for a diagnosis every second can feel like a year!

Congratulations on reaching your 4 year anniversary. And thank you for all that you do for the members of this community. For sharing your experiences and advice and for the hope that you give to those just starting their journey.

Stay safe Hazel and enjoy your summer.

    Best wishes,

P.S. Your typos are indeed still legendary

  • Hello, I had tongue cancer, spread to lymph too. I know that stunned feeling.

Things you might want to ask:

Is it HPV positive? (This will affect diagnosis) What stage am I? Average prognosis?

How large is the tumour? How many lymph nodes affected?

Will I need chemo and radiation?  Am I a candidate for proton beam?

What level radiation will I have? 50? 60? Will you blast both sides or one?

Will you recommend a feeding tube for me? (I was stage 1 and managed food, no tube)

Re working, I believe there are laws to cover your sick leave. If that's not the case, depending on any machinery/driving you might be able to stay working. I was tired but the distraction of work is sometimes good.

Wishing you all the very best, Erica
