Lump in groin- wait and see?

Firstly, I feel quite fraudulent posting here when all I have right now is speculation and too many google searches under my belt.

I have been umming and ahhing about what to do abooeut a lump I found in my groin (bikini line) two weeks ago- I'm unsure, due to the current global situation, whether to wait it out and see if anything changes or make a gp appt.

I first noticed the lump when shaving, initially I thought it was an ingrown hair (or any kind of spot/boil) but once having a good look, poke, prod and squeeze I could tell it definitely was not an ingrown hair (which I have had many of in the past, so can certainly spot one easily).

The lump felt solid and very much deep under the skin and even after squeezing and poking at it it is absolutely painless. At this point it felt the size of a small marble.

Three days ago I had noticed that the lump felt much bigger and decided to measure it with a tape measure; which was 2.5cm. I also took a photo as the lump was clearly visible.

Today I thought I would check it and it seems to have grown again, I did think that maybe I had just forgotten how it felt a few days ago so measured it and took another photo to compare. Comparing the photos you can really see the difference in size and it is now measuring 3.5cm.
Obviously google has told me lots of different reasons for this lump, mainly it being a swollen lymph node. However I haven't been unwell at all, not even a little sniffle. Also, it seems strange that if it were some sort of infection that had gone unnoticed the node isn't painful at all, it's not even tender or any soreness whatsoever, which does worry me slightly.

I hate to be dramatic and go rushing to the gp, considering how crazy things are right now, and for them to tell me it's just a cyst or an ingrown hair.
I'm also worried I will only get a phone appt and I feel like this is something that need to be physically examined rather than just me describing it over the phone.
If things were normal I wouldn't even hesistate to make an appointment, but I seem to be holding back due to potentially being fobbed off due to the current strains on the nhs overall.

So, I suppose what I'm asking is would it be reasonable to hold off for now and see if the lump changes any more over the next few weeks (I was thinking of waiting 4 weeks)?

  • Hi DramaLlama and welcome to the forum.

It's always worrying when we find unexplained lumps or bumps but as this is playing on your mind and you've noticed changes it would be best to book an appointment with your doctor as they are the only ones who can tell you more.

We know seeing GPs during the pandemic can be tough but I hope this information we have on our website will help you get the most out of your appointment.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi dramalama,

Hope you are well. I an currently experiencing something very similar, I was given some antibiotics as drs diagnosed as a cyst however it came back shortly after , I am now on a longer course of antibiotics but I don't feel hopeful. I squeezed mine at one point to which caused it to go down before coming back more painful and feels much deeper.

How are you getting on, did you manage to see a Dr ?

It's so scary finding any kind of lump and I sympathise with the stress it brings !

  • How did you get on?

I've the same but not gone gp.

In groin squeeze it it disperses internally a bit then comes back.
