Lump in armpit - very scared

23 Jan 2023 10:31

Hello,

I have noticed a somewhat hard, immobile lump in my armpit that is also painless, it doesn't feel round, it almost feels attached to my skin, the shape I would describe is long and thin! I only noticed it as I initially had pain but that pain went quickly, I noticed it 2 weeks ago and it's stayed up, hasn't grown and honestly I'm just frightened!

I am 26, I went to the doctors because of this lump and also feeling more tired than usual and he referred me under the 2 week wait (appointment for breast exam etc is tomorrow) I'm really scared! Can anyone relate?

Hi Amy_Louise,

This is always a worrying time and I can certainly relate to how you are feeling. The staff at the breast clinics are usually very pleasant and understanding, so I hope that all goes well for you tomorrow. There are a number of different types of lumps and not all signify cancer. Some are simple cysts or fibrous changes. It is unlikely that this is cancer, because you are too young for the normal catchment age - however, sadly there is no guarantee, so you are doing the right thing by getting it checked out.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Amy_Louise,

We are all scared at this stage.

Irrespective of the outcome, you will feel better once you know either way. If they have to carry out a biopsy tomorrow, you may have to wait a further 1-2 weeks for the results, so don't be surprised if this happens.

I shall be thinking of you tomorrow.
Kind regards,

Hello Jolamine

it was today, I went in and the specialist felt my armpit and said he felt like it was a cyst and then he felt my breast and said he felt a lump there (which I didn't feel) and he said he was sure it was just lumpy breast tissue, I had an ultrasound and it was clear and I was just sort of sent on my way!

Can I take this as good news?x

Hi Amy_Louise,

This certainly sounds like just the news you wanted. It is sometimes hard to take this in when you've been so worried, but I'm delighted for you.

Did he advise any regular monitoring of your lumpy breasts, or was he happy to leave it?
Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

This is always frustrating. He should send a more detailed report to your GP, so be prepared to ask him in a couple of weeks. You might find it helpful to write down some of the questions you have, so that you can get the answers you need from your GP.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Hi Amy Louise, how frustrating that they didn't tell you more after your appointment. It sounds like they are not concerned, but in your place I would want to know what they plan to do, if anything. I would call the breast unit and ask them what will happen next. They may say that nothing suspicious was found and that's the end of it, or the ultrasound images may need to be looked at by someone else. At my clinic appointment, my mammogram and ultrasound both showed suspicious areas, so they did a biopsy and I then saw a doctor who confirmed that the lump was suspicious. I went back 2-3 weeks later and breast cancer was confirmed. So it sounds as if there's nothing for you to worry about, but I would just check with the clinic for total peace of mind. Wishing you all the best, and I hope you'll come back and let us know how you get on.

God bless, Amy x
