Loosing hair

I'm 15 and I've got mouth cancer, I have a 5.5cm tumour in my mouth, I'm having chemo, and radiotherapy, I'm on my second lot of chemo and I've lost a lot of hair at the front and back, my hair is tied up in a pony tail as that's how it's stuck because I can't brush it it's all stuck together and if I do try and brush it I think that all my hair would fall out as there is only a small part of hair holding it on my head. Can anyone tell me how fast my hair will come back. And if anyone else's hairbrush got stuck together, I woke up one morning with it stuck together.

    Hi Kayleigh,

Welcome to the Forum and what a pity that you find yourself here at such a tender age. You must be so brave to go through all this.

I'm afraid that I have had no experience of Radiotherapy or chemo, so cannot answer your question. I believe that some people use a cap to try and stop the hair from falling out and I understand that there is also a shampoo that helps hair to grow back more quickly. Did your care team not tell you about this or give you a leaflet? Don't be afraid to ask them on your next hospital visit. This should have all been explained to you before you started treatment.

Hopefully someone else who has had first hand experience will come along to tell you more.

Alternatively, why not phone the nurses on this site. They have the medical knowledge to reply to your question. It is free to phone them and they are very helpful.

I hope that you find out more soon.

    Best wishes,

    Jolamine xx

  • So you must be halfway through your treatment by now as you have had 2 chemo's and 15 radiotherapies. (I assume)

My wife also has mouth and throat cancer and has had 1 chemo at the start to boost the daily radiotherapy of which she has had 8 so far. I understand that midway of the 33 radiotherapy sessions she will have another chemo. This is when her hair will start falling out.

Many of the head and neck patients here have their hair shorn to number 1 when they are half way done and then just leave it. There is nothing to stop the hair falling out but at the end you may have another chemo and then it will start growing back normally a week or so later.

Your hair may grow back with a different texture and colour but stick it out as in a months time you will have a full head of hair again. All the best and stay positive as that will also help.
