Locum surgeons?

Hi,

I just want to know if anyone else here has had a locum surgeon do surgery/ biopsy on them? I have found out recently that the surgeon who did my excisional biopsy is a locum. Alarm bells are ringing - what if this is someone who is just covering for a couple of months - or comes in ad-hoc when the hospital is super busy. I am having problems getting my results as this man is not signing off the report so I can get my results. I am going to ring the secretary again on Tuesday to see if there is any news, if nothing has been done I am going to try and find out if this person is in fact coming in regularly or covering long term, otherwise who else will actually look over my results in a timely manner? The other shocking thing is who are these people answerable to? They are agency workers. I know by the body language and the way I was treated in surgery that the lesion removed was not what was expected - not getting my results is not an option! I know that it's starting to look highly likely I am going to have to access PALS - I'd prefer that to be a last option. I wonder if talking to my GP prior to that will help? They may be able to get a copy of the pathology report that this man won't sign off?

    Hi Songbird,

I am so sorry to hear this. It is certainly worth trying to go through your GP first of all. If this doctor is a locum and doesn't attend the hospital on a regular basis, a more senior doctor could surely sign the report off on his behalf?

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine,

I should have read my earlier paperwork more thoroughly.  To be honest this whole experience has been a nightmare from the start. You have been very kind as have quite a few people in this chat forum, not with the same problem as myself, but just being very understanding and supportive in a way I will never forget.

I know that any issues would have been flagged by the labs, and that should mean that I am contacted - in principle. But if the man isn't there and the department is super busy, then it can be overlooked. I might be over thinking, but I know what my local hosptal is like and I personally know of big mistakes that have been made there.  People keep saying no news is good news - well if the man isn't signing off his paperwork, and my results are not being released and my hospital file is not in his pile - then what next? I know he has had these results since 13th April !!!!

Sorry for ranting / venting at stupid o'clock. I have woken up with a killer sore back and I can't sleep. I'm sure all will be revealed eventually.

    Hi Songbird,

I'm so sorry to hear about your sore back and hope that you can get back to sleep soon. Rant all you want - that's what this forum is great for, because we've all been there at some stage or another. I would feel the same as you. Having worked in hospitals, I know just how easy it is for records to get lost.

Contact your GP onTuesday morning and see if s/he can do anything.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine,

I will hit the phones again Tuesday. I'm much calmer now. Being sore always brings out the worst in you. Thank goodness it's a bank holiday and I am not at work - I'd be about as much use as a chocolate teapot!

I'm hoping noone else is getting this type of treatment (or lack of it)!

Jolamine - you are a star, I see you give out such a lot of good advice when people are really struggling. It's very much appreciated xx

    Hi Songbird,

I'm glad to hear that you are in a better place today. Who have you been phoning at the hospital - has it been your consultant's secretary? Enjoy your day off work.

    Regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Yes I have spoken to the secretaries twice now. That's how I knew the results were back on the 13th. The first one said she would call me back. She didn't. The second (a week later) said it still hadn't been signed off and she was printing off another copy of my results to put in his tray. She said she couldn't find my file either. Well it will be the third time in 3 weeks when I call tomorrow.

Who knows I might get an answer this time!

    Hi Songbird,

Make sure that you say all of this to whoever you speak to tomorrow. It sounds as if you are being given the run around - perhaps because your file still hasn't been found?

I hope that you have more success when you phone this time.

    Regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Here's my update - no results as yet though! I called the secretaries again today - someone different again, but new to the job. I explained everything to her and said I was aware the results had been in since 13th April and I had not had them. She said she would e-mail the locum surgeon I was under to get some clarity and she would call me back. She was true to her word and called me back a couple of hours later. The reason they are not giving my results is due to the fact only the cytology results have come back and not the histology. She says she had been in touch with the labs and they are still being processed - so it will be another 2 weeks she thinks. I will not get any results until they are all in. Why I couldn't have been told this on 13th is totally beyond me!!!! Just gotta sit tight a bit longer.

    Hi Songbird,

It sounds as if the person you spoke to today was a lot more helpful., but why you couldn't have been told this in the first place is beyond me. Still at least you now know that they're not lost in the ether, or perhaps they have been and are now found?  I hope that the results might not take the full 2 weeks, considering how long you've already been waiting. Unfortunately, this still means more waiting, but at least you now know that they are on their way.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good results.

    Regards,

    Jolamine xx
