Left Supraclavicular Lymph Node lump

Hi all,

I came across your informative site while doing the inevitable googling.

at a dental appointment a month ago my dentist found a lump just above my left collar bone which he said I should get checked by my dr.

i left it a few weeks in case it was due to infection but it didn’t go away so I saw my GP last Monday. She said it was small and probably just a gristly lump but should probably still be checked.

i had blood tests taken (Full blood count, Erythrocytes sedimentation rate, Serum CRP and Urea & electrolytes), they all came back within normal ranges.

i was sent for a chest X-ray on Thursday and told results will take about a week.

i haven’t spoken with my GP since the initial appointment and wasn’t told to make an appointment so am assuming she will contact me with results.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid last year and am on  Levothyroxine. My main symptoms for that included being tired all the time. Even on medication I still feel very tired. I’ve also been having hot flushes mainly at night for the last 2-3 months which I’ve put down to menopause (I’m 51).

ive read about the symptoms of Lymphoma and night sweats which alarmed me a bit. I’ve seen that most people say they get drenched - I’m not I just get clammy and have to take all the bed covers off me until I cool down.

My questions is, what will a chest X-ray be looking for? I see on most posts that people are sent for ultrasound / CT / biopsy.

im trying not to worry, I know it’s unlikely to be anything serious but just wondering what I should expect now.

thanks :)

  • Heya

X-ray tends to be the first step in the scanning process, whilst they don't show up a lot of issues, they are also a quicker and cheaper way to begin to ascertain if something is wrong. X-rays can show up types of infection plus they do show up enlarged lymph nodes.

Yes they are less detailed and it night be that your gp then sends you for a CT or ultrasound, but as I said they usually are quicker and rule out a lot of things :)

Wishing you well in the road to recovery

I've gone through the lymphoma scanning and diagnostic process, and whilst you probably don't have that , if you've got any questions feel free to ask and I'll see if I can help :)

  • Thank you for your quick response Rose.

hopefully it’s nothing but good to have these forums for reassurance and advice.

ive always thought X-rays were for bone.

    I hope you are well.

  • Whilst I have no medical background having spoken to my gps and consultants over the year it seems rhat chest x-rays are used to look for enlarged lymph nodes too. Mad how many things there are these days.

    No worries

This site and chat has been a great help to me and source of info :)

  • Following up from my previous post, the chest X-ray and blood tests came back clear so my GP doesn't seem to be worried and didn't request more tests.

The lump is still there. Just wondering if I should follow up again with my GP.

I'm due a followup ENT appointment for an unrelated problem. Would the ENT dr be able to check it?

any advice would be welcome please.

    thanks

  • Hi I was wondering if you had an update anything further on yours? I have lumps above my collarbone and have the US tomorrow I am so scared. I had all the blood tests inc vitamin tests for iron etc and all came back clear but unfortunately I have seen posts on here where people said they had clear bloods but was still diagnosed x

  • Hi Mandejw

How did your ultrasound go? I am having very similar symptoms.  Hope all went well.

    Best wishes

  • Hi

My US went better than expected, they could not see anything at all on my collarobe, they could feel it but nothing was showing up. The doctor/radioligist assured me they were using some of the best equipment in high definition and if there was anything there they would see it so she thinks it is fatty lumps. I asked twice if she was sure as you can feel them but she was.

Always best to get anything like this checked as my life has been on pause since October last year waiting for this US

What symptoms are you having? I am not a Dr but i can tell you if they are similar to mine and what i have been through

    xx

  • Hi Mandejw

Fabulous news USS was all ok. Im sure you are so relieved.  I feel like I'm living the same nightmare as you. Started in Nov with pain in front of neck,  pain into jaw and in to ears, tinnitus. This then developed into pain in my mouth and back of throat. I've had an ENT appointment last week, which I paid privately for. I had the camera down my throat, he felt my neck and looked in my mouth and he found nothing.  All healthy. For my reassurance,  he has requested a USS neck and CT sinus but through NHS so with how things are, it will be ages away. In the midst of that, in the dip above my collarbone there feels like a small lymph node. I'd say 3-4mm. When I touch it, it shoots from under my fingers so is really moveable. But if I press hard enough,  I reakon I can feel others behind it. Gp ringing me Friday so will speak to him about it. Unfortunately,  I dont think I'm being taken very seriously. I seem to have developed a severe health anxiety. I had some abdo / bowel symtoms back in oct so tests to date are abdo/pelvis USS,  abdo pelvis CT, colonoscopy, ENT endoscopy. All negative. I think the gp thinks I'm nuts. I am trying to relax and maybe some of these symptoms are anxiety related but I cant help feeling something isn't quite right. Blood tests have all come back fine too. Thanks for listening and really pleased you are ok.

  • Hi dont panic too much about the movable lymph node on your collarbone i have the same and its just a node that runs away when i touch it!! Its good that you are getting an US and also that ENT couldnt find anything take some positivity from that. Keep your chin up and remeber not everything is sinister. xx
