Lacking information and feeling a bit lost

HI there.  We live in Spain and I have recently been diagnosed with a small (7mm) tumour in my left breast.  I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node removal (or biopsy, not sure) last Weds (which was about 2 weeks after diagnosis).  I don't speak enough Spanish to confidently have a conversation about the cancer with the surgeon so we have a translator at the appointments  (who is a psychiatrist and not a cancer specialist, so it's not ideal to say the least!).  I haven't been told anything about my cancer and feel rather lost as people on here (and other related sites) seem to have so much information about their tumours.  I am seeing the surgeon this evening and have a list of question to ask her (through the psychiatrist!!).  I know I have to have radiotherapy but don't know when I'll be starting and the surgeon said last time that she can't tell me but I will be referred to an oncologist who will give me all the information that I need.  I'm not sure if I would feel any better if I was back in the UK but I do feel as if I have no information about what I've got/had/am about to undergo.  I don't even know (yet) whether 3 sentinel nodes were removed or just bits of 3 of them were taken for biopsy but I'll ask tonight.  Anyway, any stories of similar experiences would be good to hear about and I also wanted to let others know that the lumpectomy and sentinel node work (removal/biopsy?) wasn't too bad.  Had drains for a couple of days and was uncomfortable but not really painful.  Only needed painkillers for a couple of days and then nothing.  Am taking antibiotics though, which I assume is pretty normal.  Still bound up like a mummy (which isn't great in 40 deg heat) but I'm hoping that these will be off later today.  The info on here is very reassuring.  Thanks very much.

  • I am in the U.K. Had the same as you in 2012,also had 3 nodes removed, found bit of cancer in one, had a further 15 removed, they were all clear,so had to have 15 rounds of radiotherapy, 5 each week for 3 weeks, then put on arimidex tablet and 3 monthly checkups at breast clinic and yearly mammograms, which have all been clear, still monitored at breast clinic ,so please don,t worry,it's the not knowing that's the worst, just take it step by step, things will be ok,much love x

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my post and reply.  I'm so glad to hear that all went well for you.  I went to see the surgeon last night and she said that while my tumour was a bit larger than they though (still only 11mm though which sounds quite small to me?), it has not spread at all and my sentinel nodes are clear.  She has signed me off and I'm now waiting to hear from my insurance company (we are not eligible to use the public health service in Spain, although our private health is very similar to the NHS in the UK) about which oncologist I can see and when.  I am hoping that the oncologist speaks English! My bandages have made me sore but otherwise I am not in any pain during day to day activities, just feeling tender.  I feel so lucky as this tumour was found through a mammogram that I decided to book myself (I was not called in) just because it felt like a couple of years since I'd had one.  Turns out it was five yesrs since I'd last had one.  How time flies!  Anyway, if I had left it - which I might well have done - I might have been looking at a very different outcome.... She also said I will have to take hormone tablets although she didn't say what they would be.  Thanks for your info and continued good health to you x

  • Thankyou for your reply, all sounds very positive for you, hope everything goes ok, and soon on the road to recovery x
