Just got the news

Sooo... thought I'd start a new thread. Doc said it's a 2cm lump that's breast cancer and it's spread to the lymph in my arm. Waiting for CT scan. Feeling oddly calm. Going to work tomorrow. Asked doc if it's ok and they said yes so that'll help. Any meditation, books, whatever spiritual that helps? I find it calming so any suggestions welcome. Also any advice on healthy eating -I'm vegan and a bit worried about that bit- also welcome.

Generally feeling odd. Haven't eaten properly in weeks and today I just grabbed a pizza and a burger for dinner.

  • I am new to this forum too so still processing my diagnosis also. Am here if you need a cyber friend x

  • Hello Brian1977

I think that many of our members here will understand the feeling of oddly calm but out-of-sorts mood that comes after a cancer diagnosis. For many people, there is so much energy wound up in the pre-diagnosis worry that it can be a very strange relief when you finally get a diagnosis. The limbo that we find ourselves in prediagnosis has gone and now it's sort of a "now I know what I'm dealing with I can start to move forwards with things again". I hope that being at work today has brought some small sense of normality and helped.

With regards to your question about healthy eating, you might find it helpful to have a look at this information on the Maggie's website. I'd also suggest giving our team of nurses a call to chat things through with them. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and information they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your CT scan and then the team will be able to discuss a treatment plan with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Brian1977 I totally relate I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular breast cancer on Thursday and I feel so much calmer now I know what it is and what the plan is. I'm a veggie (with limited dairy) but I switched my diet up a couple of weeks ago and completely cut out sugar, only eating organic fruit and veg, limited carbs. I gave up alcohol four years ago and I couldn't be more grateful for that. This is probably not for everyone but it gives me some power back. I love being in nature and try and get to the woods most days this has a huge calming affect on me. I also paint and last weekend I bought a 1500 word jigsaw, which has now taken over the dining room table for anyone that wants to add a bit. My friend bought me a knitting starter kit for Christmas, which I loved, so yesterday I ordered some long knitting needles and chunky wool and I'm going to start knitting a scalf, which I'm not going to stop knitting until I'm cancer free. I'm hoping it will be a short scalf  I also bought a beautiful book for journaling and I'm writing in their most days. I like getting my worries down on paper. Wishing you all the very best in your treatment x

  • KLF49- I too have started knitting! My wee Granny would be impressed as I haven't picked up the needles in 30yrs but getting some solace from that and love a jigsaw too. I am an autistic adult and find comfort in crafting, problem solving and being creative.
I hope your scarf is a short one x

Do you have any hobbies Brian1977 ?

  • Love it! I'm the same I think my mum taught me about 40 years ago but also haven't picked up needles since  we should share photos of our makes haha. Like you if I'm in a creative space then I'm happy x

  • Did you get your CT scan Brian1977? x

  • Sorry to hear your news I got told Oct 2021. Last year was spent having chemo and radiation this year getting better fingers crossed stay positive do what's best for you I learned to crochet granny squares and have done a lot of knitting.  Take care stay strong x

  • Thanks for the response and best of luck with your treatment too. Cutting sugar and salt and... smokes is a problem but I'm getting there. Knitting sounds like fun, my skill is about zero but I enjoy browsing other peoples stuff on Etsy. I draw too, somehow not in the mindset for it right now. Will get to it I hope :)

  • Hey Shalaway, I draw and play video games trying to get the interest for them again. The CT scan is scheduled on the 7th of Feb. Not optimistic but not freaking out either. Hope it stays that way :)

Would be nice if you guys posted your crafting btw. Not sure if possible on the forum but would be fun to see. Last knitting I did I was 12. It was... artistic.

  • Thanks Lobelia. Hope things are going better for you now. You learned to crotchet too? I feel left out... lol
