Just Diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma on Tongue

Hi

I have a smal lump on the side of my tongue, I noticed it in January.  Went to the Dentist end of April - put on a 2 week referral, had a biopsy and on the 24th June the consultant said it was Squamous Cell Carcinoma.  He said it was very very small, tiny in fact when he looked at and looking at it alone a T1.  Pre Op, MRI and CT next week.  My glands were also normal by him feeling them

Treatment plan pre scans is that he will remove the tumour, approx 1cm dia but also as a precaution give me a neck disecction aswell.on the right hand side.  2-3 days in hospital then at least 2 weeks rest at home.

Stll trying to process.  My job involves talking all day to customers and suppliers so worried aobut my speech and as I work for a small family business I am the only one in the office..  Worried what the scans are going to reveal aswell which could change the course of the treatment plan.  Anxious about the surgery obvoulsy.  Worred about my recovery, what will it entail, when will I be able to go back to work.  Luckily I work 5 mins away and I can work from home on laptop

I have not told my 15 year old daughter yet, altough I have alerted the Mental Health team at her school as she goes into year 11 in September so they are on stand by.  Haven;t told my elderly parents yet, my Dad is 80 and is unwell and suffers from huge anxiety. Am thinking not to tell them but there again I speak to my Mum every Sunday!

Hopefully surgery will be w/c 18th July.  I know this sounds silly and please do not judge but we have a pre covid holiday booked abroad on the 30th August aswell, Consultant replield he could not see it as a problem.

Has anyone been through this?  Can anyone advise what I might be facing? x

  • Hi Bettyboo123,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of what you're going through, and your concerns are of course all totally understandable.

Discuss as much as you can with your doctor/specialist about your concerns around work, the holiday, and next steps in terms of timelines. Finding out as much as you can will help you to prepare for different options.

In terms of telling those around you, take things one step at a time - and one day at a time. No doubt it will be difficult but I'm sure you'll find it will eventually help to speak to others and you'll end up getting support from family and friends.

Hopefully your work will be understanding - it sounds like there is some flexibility with this in terms of the home working and being close to home, but it will be fine to take as much time as you need away from work.

Hopefully you'll receive other replies here soon, particularly if there are others with similar experience. We're always here for support if you need it, and I hope you find the forum useful.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
