Just been told I have Breast Cancer

Hi I have just come back from my one stop breast cancer clinic and have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer - the good news is that I only deceted the lump (I check my breasts every 4 weeks) on the 5th June and the cancer has not spread I am due to see the surgeon on Thursday for my treatment plan but he has advised that as it has not spread I only require a lumpectomy has anyone else had this procedure could you advise how long you were out of action. Scared but Hopeful.

  • Was back at work after two and a half weeks albeit on reduced hours!

  • Hi Im the same but told I will have 3 weeks of radiation treatment after but I have it in 2 of my Iymph nodes so perhaps thats the differance but Im worried sick

  • Radiotherapy won’t start until you have healed. Usually takes a week or so so from the ct tom appointment to radiotherapy actually starting.

  • Testing nodes is standard practice with a lumpectomy. So most will have it done.

  • Sorry to cast a dark shadow, but what I’ve learned from all my treatment, is to take one day at a time, things change. What you’ve been told was the initial diagnosis for me, then I had to have a 2nd surgery, then they discovered that it was stage 3, so chemo was suggested... then I had a new test and found out that I only needed radiotherapy...

i suggest that you relax and wait for a final report, before worrying about it!

The only thing you need to know is, you will be ok... :)

  • My mum had DCIS back in the late 80s (with no info to indicate otherwise I'm guessing this is your diagnosis?)  She had a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy.

She actually recovered very quickly from the lumpectomy itself and would have been back at work within 5 days had they not temporarily killed her by giving her penicillin :D It wasn't funny then but we can laugh about it now, I mean it was the hospital where she was then a theatre nurse and her notes screamed "allergic to penicillin", as well as her repeating it to everyone involved in her care!

If you're seeing your surgeon on Thursday does that mean all your 'staging scans' have been done?

Glad you're hopeful, it really sounds like you should be.

Let us know how you get on.
