Itchy mole and getting smaller

hi all,

ive got an appointment booked at the gp next week, but hoping for some reassurance in the meantime - I’ve had a mole on my private area for several years - it’s never caused me a problem. A few months ago it became itchy, but other than that there was no changes apart from it got slightly bigger. It stopped after a few days. But a couple of days ago it has become smaller, to the point where you can barely notice it, is this normal? I’m just kind of worried and stressed having to wait until next week to be seen by a gp :(

  • Hi Jadem,

You don't say how old you are. Up to the age of 40 it's not unusual for new moles to appear or existing ones to disappear, however it's still good to get it checked out, especially if it got itchy first. As it's disappearing could you possibly take a photo on your phone to show the GP, just in case it's gone completely by the time of your appointment. I know it may be difficult if it's in an unusual place but it would help the GP if you can.

Don't panic if the GP refers you to dermatology - that is what NICE guidelines say they must do if they can't diagnose it or they unsure what it is. 75% of people referred are found to have benign, easily treatable conditions.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
