Itchy mole

A mole under my armpit has been giving me bother for about 4 weeks. It is so itchy and sometimes painful. I have avoided shaving and using deodorant for a while to see if it improves but it has stayed the same. It is about the size of a rice crispy and had darker pigment in the middle.

I went to my gp and they told me it is ok to leave. I haven't managed to get much rest because of how itchy it is, it is also flaky at times too.

Should I get a second opinion or should I leave it?

I'm probably just worried as I have a very long history of skin cancer in my family and my mum was diagnosed with melanoma a few years back.

  • Hi,

I think it would be a good idea to get a second opinion. Ask if your practice has a GP that specialises in dermatology so they can check it with a dermascope. If they don't, still ask to see a different GP for their opinion. Did you mention about your mum's melanoma history to the GP? If not, make sure you mention it to the second GP. It should be taken into account when they decide if your mole needs checking by a dermatologist. Hopefully it will just be irritated by something or the underlying skin is infected (malignant moles aren't usually painful) but you definitely need them to give you peace of mind. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
