Is this throat cancer? Please help, I am terrified!

Hello, I hope someone will advise me because I am so scared that I have throat cancer that I can't sleep or perform any of my daily activities anymore, because this is all I think about. I am a 19 year old male.

I had an on and off sore throat and hoarseness for many many months, but was a smoker, so didn't think too much about it. However, I quit around two months ago and not long after that the sore throat and hoarseness started again and continue to this day. Furthermore, During the last month I developed difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing. Not only does food sometimes feels like it sticks to my throat when swallowing, I have difficulty performing the swallowing action itself, even when I only have saliva in my moath. It's as if my muscles are harder to contract or something. The breathing problems feel as if something is blocking the air flow and I need to put extra effort in if I want to take a deep breath. Furthermore, my chest often hurts when I swallow. During the past few days, I developed this constant urge to clear my throat, but it is impossible to do so no matter how much I try. It's as if something is stuck there.

I have been told I have acid reflux before. I saw 2 GPs about this problem in the last weeks and both of them didn't even bother to look at me after learning that I have a history of acid reflux, they just gave me some omeprozol and told me not to come back for a month.

The symptoms seem far too severe for a simple thing like acid reflux, especially since I have been living with it for a few years and never had anything this bad. I have found online that these symptoms are consistent with throat ir esophagus cancers and now am in absolute panic mode. I cannot sleep or focus on anything else but the thoughts of cancer and dying.

Therefore, I have the following questions:

Is it possible that acid reflux would cause symptoms so severe?

How likely is it to be cancer?

What else could be causing this?

And finally, how fast are these types if cancer? How risky is it to wait the month for an appointment? Because all I can think about is how the cancer is growing and spreading and how it will be to late by the time anyone actually tests me.

  • Hello Robert176 and welcome to the forum.  I am sorry to learn of your discomfort and worry.   I have no medical training and the same goes for others on this forum and so couldn't possibly make a guess at what is causing your unpleasant symptoms.  There are nurses who work on this website but they too would not attempt to make a diagnosis without a physical examination; however you can ring them Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm if you think it would help you.

There are other things that could be causing your symptoms, not nearly so scary as cancer.  You may have worried yourself unnecessarily by googling your symptoms.  We have a standing joke here that "Dr Google" should have been struck off years ago.  The trouble with google is that I think they have to cover themselves and include every possible disease no matter how unlikely; that way nobody can complain (as people do in this litigious world) that they had a disease that google doesn't mention.  A real flesh and blood doctor will examine and test before making a decision and then possibly test again just to rule out some possibilities.  By the way, did the omeprazole help at all?  I understand from the NHS website that some people need to have a long-term prescription.

But you are suffering and I can understand that you are concerned to get to the cause of what is happening.  So go back to your doctor and explain that the problem is no better and is causing you distress.   I am sorry I cannot answer the questions you ask but it would be very wrong of us to make guesses.  We would like to know how you get on and if your doctor is going to take a thorough look at your oesophagus to get the matter decided.  In the meantime try to relax as this is probably exacerbating your symptoms; easier said than done but we all know the "lump in your throat" syndrome when upset.  I am not suggesting that this is the cause of your problems but it may be exacerbating them.

My best wishes to you.  Annie

  • Hi Robert

welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about you worries

as annieliz has said we are not medically trained hear just people who have been through cancer or going through or looking after someone that is or has

i myself am now 3.5 post treatment for throat cancer and doing well

you do appear to have researched Dr google a tad too much and this tends to result in a worrying self diagnosis that could be so far from the truth and could make you feel worse than you are

however you obviously have concerns and the only way you are going to settle your mind is to go and see you gp

throat cancer is rare and if there is an age group that it’s early 50’s not someone as young as yourself ... but as I said I’m no doctor

let us know how you get on and ask anything thing you want as this is a very worrying time for you

  • Hi Robert, I've suffered from the same symptoms for years, lump in throat, difficulty swallowing, espcially saliva or cold liquids, feeling like my throat is closing causing weezing or difficulty breathing, choking sensation, and even actual choking on foods followed by gasping for air. I have no food allergies, or medical issues that the doctors can find. I do however suffer from anxiety and when these symtoms started I then started having panic attacks. I belevie I've found the cause of my symptoms. CRICOPHARYNGEAL SPASM. It's when the throat muscle over contracts and I believe it's linked to acid reflux and stress. Do your symptoms ever go away? Because mine do. I don't think cancer systems go away. Im no medical professional but from my experience on this issue it eases when I eat solid food and relax a little by drinking some red wine. My doctors also prescribed anxiety meds but I don't like taking pills unless I really have to. The day I found this diagnosis and mentally accepted it as the one and only cause, my symptoms immediately subsided. Our body's are amazing things and can effect us in strange ways. All those feelings eventually went away for about a year but have recently started back up and of course my mind immediately assumes the worst which makes my symptoms worse. Lol. It's a vicious cycle. So I'm heading back to the doctors, they want me to have a Barrium Swallow test done. We'll see what that turns up, maybe it will confirm my diagnosis. Did you ever find out more answers?

  • Hi Robert,

Am also sorry to hear of your discomfort and would probably suggest that you ask your GP to refer you to ENT to at least put your mind at rest if the medication prescribed does not clear up your symptoms.

I had same but we are all different and lets home your medication sorts out but would also advise not to let drag on too long if you still feel the way you do.
It's normal to be worried but not all symptoms are doom and gloom and even worst case scenarios have many successful treatments.
Would also, in my opinion, try not to google to much with symptoms as lots of misinformation on there are just sets the mind into overdrive.

Wish you well and keep us posted on how things go.

    Kind regards

    Ian

  • Hiya my doctor told me it's anxiety but havnt been able to eat in 10 days from a blockage in my throat had it 2 week's if it's fake it feels so real what did yours feel like because mine feels like a big cloud on the back of my throat hooking any food

  • Hi everyone

I have had a sore throat on and off now for about 6-7 weeks. I went to see doctor 3 weeks ago who said it was probably viral and to go back if worsens. It still was the same so I went back yesterday and he checked my throat again . No swollen glands no lumps, slight temp but nothing major and no redness on throat. He’s done boood tests and prescibed me some acid reflux tablets to try. Just waiting for blood test results but I’m out of my mind with worry thinking they’re going to come back with something more serious. I didn’t have it yesterday but it came back today and feels worse today other days it comes and goes throughout the day mainly on an evening. Can anyone help put my mind at rest as google has sent my mind into over drive !! Thanks in advance

  • I have had throat trouble, sore throats, choking, hoarseness etc for almost 2 years. My consultant told me laryngeal spasm was causing the choking so he stretched something in my throat to allow more space for swallowing. Recently I've been feeling very unwell, no appetite and losing weight. He has finally agreed to admit me for investigation and to do a biopsy. I know something is seriously wrong. I just need to know. Why have I been kept in the dark until my body is almost collapsing.

Insist on investigation at an early stage

  • Hi Robert 176,

I can sympathise with you as I'm suffering awfully with my throat..

I also have acid reflux and get anxiety bad but fight this alot.

My throat feels and the only way I can describe it is like I have sucked a hot pepper sweet and you know when you breathe in and it feels clear and cold, it really is prominent and bothers me alot and I feel I have a lump sometimes, I always get pulpitations with fuels it more, I too suffer what I call spicy throats but its like you have sand paper at the back and my voice is in the morning really horse and low, I haven't been to my doctor for I don't want to be fobbed off yet again.

I also feel zapped of all energy alot of the time but as I say I have other stuff going on, maybe go back and demand to be look at as it isn't going away for you, god bless and hope it gets sorted.

God bless all who have fought cancer and for Al whose still fighting ️ ️

  • hi sallya4820

It was very interesting reading your post as you’ve almost exactly describe what I have been going through for the last two years I have been diagnosed with laryngeal dystonia but I’m starting to think maybe it’s something more sinister I have had a camera down my nose I’ve had x-rays I’ve had a camera down my throat and nothing at this stage has shown up,  other than a small lump in my right breast which I am having looked at but I insisted today on having a full blood count as I am feeling very unwell totally exhausted and nobody seems to know what’s going on,  I understand everybody’s fear there is nothing worse than not knowing and then the actual waiting part for test results  is also stressful  and it feels as if it’s weeks between one appointment to the next all the time you’re wondering what’s going on in your body.

in my head I’m already planning my own demise due to how unwell iam feeling, it would be nice if somebody could just say it’s either this or that and I knew where I stood .

to everybody out there suffering with the unknown I feel your stress and your pain and wish you all good luck on getting some answers for all of us.

  • First of all, what your doctors never explained is, with acid reflux, it causes swelling and possibly a kind of abscess, in the esophagus.

I am not a doctor, but I will talk about my experiences. For EIGHT years, I have had acid reflux, which has caused so many issues in my throat.  The main one being food does get stuck in my throat, whether it is Bread, meat or even rice.

I have had cameras down my throat, hell I was even accused by my doctor of being a liar. You cannot eat for 24 hours before the cam, I didnt eat for 30, and they still found food.

Anyway, back to food stuck, four or five times, food getting stuck has been so bad, that I have had to go to an A&E hospital and have buscopan drips and other such things. The longest I have had to be there, in the waiting room, choking on food is 6 hours.

Most of the time, I dont notice food is stuck, I drink something and then I end up nearly drowning on the drink. I have to force myself to throw the food out of my throat, again this hasnt always worked, and I have had to go to Accident and Emergency.

I have found things like drinking plenty of liquids to help lubricate the throat, has prevented the food being stuck, but I admit, I dont always remember to do this. Lubricating the throat, allows food to be able to slide down easier. If food gets stuck, I have found that Olive oil can help slide it down.

The above does give me panic attacks, especially when I am drowning on the water/drink whilst food is stuck in my throat. The best option I can give you here, and it took me a long time to discover, is calm down, breathe through your nose, and it will reduce the panic.
