Is it nearly the end?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently helping care for my grandad who has bowel cancer that has spread and now nearing the end if his life. I've never lost anyone this close to me before. He basically brought me and my siblings up.

He stopped eating about 3 weeks ago but has been sipping on a bit of what he fancies. Then being sick as a result. He had an anti sickness injection from the district nurse this morning. As a result he has started saying horrible things and acting out of character.

He has a cough and is extremely tired and all skin and bone. Do you think he might dye soon ? Do you know how long this suffering part takes?

I can't bear to see him like this, maybe I am naive.

I just want to try and prepare myself as much as possible for when the time comes. I just don't know how and when it's all going to end.

Sorry I'm not really talking to my family about it because I don't want to upset anyone else or make it awkward.

Any advice would be greatful.

Thank you, from Katie

  • Hi Katie,

I'm really sorry to hear your grandad & your family are going through all this. Unfortunately it's almost impossible for us to say whether your grandad is reaching the end of his suffering, only his health carers can give some idea of his deterioration. Is there someone in your family that is dealing with speaking to his nurses & GP? I suggest  they (or you in the absence of a key family member) contact the nurses who are caring for him or his GP and ask them their opinion. Also tell them he is distressed (that's why he is acting out of character). If he is becoming distressed they may give him an injection to help calm him. Don't deal with this all yourself - I know you want to spare your family the upset but you all need to be helping each other & your grandad at this sad time - so talk to them & share your concerns.
