Is a good sign if they operate on your liver?

I feel like i talk to people here more than i do anyone else these days, its like cancer takes over every aspect of your life, seems its all we talk about at home now, all we think about, in sure i see more adverts in it now too!

so my dad is under urgunt care for advanced colon cancer secondary liver. His had his op on the colon, 6-6 weeks ago now, he has chemo in the form of a tablet for 15 days, 7 days rest then chemo cia the line in hospital, i never even knew you couod have a tablet! His liver mass is 5.5cm and after per scans last week it appears its bot spread anywhere else, we were worried it would have as had 17 lymph nodes remived 3 if which were canceruos. He was told today couple chemo sessions then off to the hospital for op on the liver. So will this be like his primary cancer where they cut it out and thats it?!
Has anyone else had a liver op, was that it or is there still more treatment needed i font know if this is a good position to be in or not.  Cxx

  • I'm not a medic, but it's definitely a good sign! If colon cancer has spread to the liver they will only operate there if it is worthwhile.

You have said that this is colon cancer and that the liver is secondary. But only your Dad's medical team can tell you whether the liver op is being carried out with curative intent.

But the liver op is definitely good news. Hold that thought! Harry

  • Hello Kirsta,

l have replied to your posts in the past and l note your dads treatment is progressing. You ask is it a good sign if they operate on your liver,?, my response is that its a great sign that they can as the spread looks to be confined to the outer lobes where they are able to remove the cancerous area with a good margin of healthy tissue to avoid contamination and spread.Reading Harrys post l would say the intent is to remove the cancer and allow the the healthy tissue to regenerate,so cure is the objective. You still face the chance of previous outward spread to other organs, but your fathers team must be confident their is a good chance this has been contained to proceed with surgery as opposed to only having pallitive control .                                                                                                                                 l had colon cancer with spread to the liver, with tumours presenting on both lobes .l lost 45% of one and !5% of the other. The bowel surgery was a lot easier than the liver, which was extremely painful for several days following the surgery.l then had eight 3 week rounds of xelox chemo to mop up any chance of stray cells, which left me with permanent neuropathy of the feet, thats the bad news. The good news that l now live a full active life, look younger than l did before, enjoy life to the full, and have made a remarkable recovery.l was 62 at diagnosis,l am now 69 but look under 60 and am an active livestock farmer, its been a hard road ,but one with a good destination at the end of it,if you saw me in person you could never believe what l went through. If you have any further questions, feel free, to ask,

                                                                                                                                                 keep moving forward,

                                                                                                                                                                                  David
