Investigative surgery- Partial thyroidectomy experience

I wanted to post on here my experience so far in the hope that it may help and give reassurance to others in a similar situation. I read through this website coming up to my surgery and it helped me a lot.

I am an active and healthy 32 year old female who enjoys exercise, music, gigs and fashion.

I noticed a lump in my neck 4 months ago. I am a Dentist so I knew the importance of monitoring these. To begin with I thought it was a swollen node but when it had not resolved and had grown in size over a period of the next 4 weeks I booked an appointment with my GP. He referred me for an ultra sound scan. I had the scan a month later which showed a suspicious nodule attached to my right thyroid lobe. I was then referred for an  an ultra sound guided FNA. I had this 1 week later. The experience of the FNA is much better than it sounds. I had local anaesthetic injection into the thyroid area and then another needle in the area to remove some cells for testing. It was not a painful experience only slightly uncomfortable. The wait for the results was much worse.
The results came back as a thy3f, no cancer cells was detected in the sample however the cells present were abnormal. The lesion was 5cm. 1 in 4 thy3f are cancerous and therefore a partial thyroidectomy was advised by my consultant.
This news was hard to digest. I have always had a major fear of having a GA ( although I have been involved in many surgeries over my career) I was terrified about the scar it was going to leave and the recovery process. My every waking area was spent feeling dread and of the verge of tears, I wasn't sleeping and struggling to eat. I couldn't get 1 out 4 our my mind.

I had the surgery 5 days ago and I feel amazing. I had no sickness after the GA, the pain was minimal and controlled easily by paracetamol. The worst bit of it all was the over night stay in hospital, I just couldn't sleep as I am a fussy sleeper any way.

I had my drain taken out the next morning, which was unpleasant but manageable. My wound was held together by staples which is pretty shocking to look at to begin with but I returned to hospital three days later to have the staples removed. The wound is red and swollen still but very neat and I really think over the next few months it will heal and blend well and I am already proud of it, it is part of me and an achievement.
I am waiting for the results of the thyroid tissue which is going to take three weeks but I am calm and keeping myself as busy as my stiff neck will allow me! I am eating lots of protein and vegetables to heal my wound and feed a positive mind.

I hope if someone's reads this and is having a similar procedure it makes them feel less afraid and good luck to you.

  • Hi [@Flowerf4iry]‍

  • Thank you Jenn for your reply.

Just an update to my previous post. I had my results today and it was good news. It was revealed to be a follicular adenoma ( benign tumour) so not further treatment needed.
I still hope that my post about my experience helps others worried about surgery.
All the best to anyone who reads my post and good luck!

  • I am so grateful to you for posting this. I am awaiting a partial throidectomy under virtually identical circumtances. 2 inconclusive biopsies (insifficient cells or too heavily bloodstained) and ultrasound catagorised as thy3f. I am 41 and have never bean in hospital over night other than following child birth 20 years ago and have never had GA. I am so so nervous about the entire process, not to mention the possibilty of a cancer diagnosis. However, I am also very relieved to have a plan in place after 8 months of testing and re testing with no conclusive results.

I am over the moon for you and your happy ending and am so glad to hear that what I have yet to go through might not be as bad as Ive made it in my head.

    Many thanks x

  • Hi Chilts79,

I am so glad you found my post helpful and hopefully it has helped ease your nervousness about the process. The worry leading up to it all was definitely a lot worse than the actual op and recovery. If you want any advice/recommendations on things that I have found helpful post surgery feel free to message.

I really hope you you make a quick recovery and have equally as good news.  x

  • Thank you so very much. You’ve been so reassuring xx

  • Hi Chilts79

i just wanted to reply as I had a partial thyroidectomy this time last week due to an enlarged left lobe and thy3F biopsy. I'd also had the surgery cancelled twice previously, both times after being at the hospital waiting to go to theatre! I promise you the build up is worse than the op! I was terrified as I'd never had a GA or really ever been ill which is good going for an active 38 year old! The GA was so quick once you enter the room and before you know it you're awake in recovery. I wasn't in that much pain, easily controlled but my voice was a little husky. The thing i'd been most scared of was the drain, this is stitched into a tiny hole coming from your neck on a long tube and attached to a bottle with small amounts of blood in. Just don't accidently kick it off your bed in the night like I did! I had got so worked up about the drain coming out but it was fine, the stitches r snipped and then within 6-8 seconds it's out!! The first few days home were frustrating as I felt tired and very bruised across my chest but in the grand scheme of things it's all been both manageable and bearable and has given me an excuse to eat lots of ice cream! The frustrating thing for me has been not being able to walk my dogs but I have been advised to be very careful for at least 2 weeks. I wish you all the best with your op! I'm now waiting my results. Honestly- I was just like you beforehand and kept trawling the internet for any info I could find! And thank you to everyone who has posted previously, it's so helpful reading other peoples experiences. Take care everyone!

  • Hi I'm due to go in for part thyroid removal tomorrow I'm so scared I've been reading lots of different stuff on the internet which I know is not helping at all I would be grateful for any advise please x

  • Honestly, the waiting is the worst- you will be absolutely fine, make sure you have lots of easy to swallow food at home when you leave hospital. Haven't got much more info to add than what I already posted but honestly- the worst part for me was the build up and the not knowing.

  • How long was you in hospital my consultant said I could be home the same day which worries me about incase there is bleeding thanks for the reply

  • Just one night because of the drain coming from your neck , but I would of been happy to go home the same day. I think it depends how much blood drains into the bottle- if it went over 100ml I would of been kept in a second night but it stopped at 90ml.
