I’m terrified

My husband has had a very painful sore throat and large swelling on the left side of his neck with a really sore throat .He went to the doctors and the6 referred him to the ENR specialist who put a camera down and found a 2cm mass on the back of his tongue and said the swelling was his lymph node.Having a biopsy Monday in the tongue and Having mri scan and also had a cat scan.Im So terrified  of the outcome ,he falls asleep a lot and has a dreadful pain at the back of his neck/head.Please can someone help me I’m so scared and I want to be strong for him.Thankyou lovely people The surgeon also said that he did not like the look of this when he looked at the back of the throat and started telling us about intense radiotherapy for 6 weeks

  • Hello Betbunhugo,

Am sorry to hear of your husbands symptoms and I understand how you will both be anxious and concerned.
Given surgeon has highligted concerns and discussing 6 weeks radiotherapy will only have increased your anxiety but good that you are having the apporopriate tests done soon,

Its not automatic cancer and non of us can diagnose here but in the event of the worst case scenario it is not all doom and gloom.
I was diagnosed this with throat cancer and am currently going through my 6 week radiotherpy treatment, but its not all doom and gloom at all and consultant said looking to cure and this type is very treatable.

That said, I know its difficult, but try and stay as positive and strong as you can be and wait and see how the results pan out then take from there.

Im here if you want to ask any questions or just want to chat away about anything.

Wishing you both well and good luck next week and further chat with consultant.

    kind regards
    Ian

  • hi Ian,thankyou so much for responding, you must think i am so rude,I don’t know how this forum works and had no idea you had replied until I logged in and went to my page.

Anyhow I’m sure I’ll work my way around it.I am sorry that you are going through this, you sound amazing, and it’s very reassuring to speak  to you.Everyone on this forum are amazing and what a wonderful way we can communicate with fears, woes, positivity etc.

Would it be rude of me to ask how you are feeling at the moment? With reference to coping with the treatment.

i have been up all night with my Husband as he has such a terrible pain in the back of his head, just behind the ear,I’m wondering if it’s the pressure from the neck lymph node being so inflamed. The only thing that seems to help is a cold towel wrapped around his head.Roll on tomorrow for the tongue biopsy.I know I will be stronger when there is a plan of action and what we are dealing with.Your head and mind runs away with you when your guess working.

Id like to stay in contact with you if that’s ok,and will be thinking of you daily as you deal with this treatment and come through it with flying colours.Ill let you know our results and thankyou again for connecting with me.Im here for you also even though I’m a little shaken.God  Bless  Karen x

  • Sorry to hear of your obvious distress. Tomorrow will hopefully reveal what you are up against. The good news with throat and neck cancers when caught early, as they invariably are, is that they are not only highly treatable BUT also curable. I’ve had 2 ops and a course of RT this year for an early stage vocal cord cancer which has now gone ! Whatever tomorrow holds you are in with a great chance of full recovery. Some of the treatment may prove very unpleasant, everyone reacts differently to radiotherapy, I was terrified when I read the possible side effects, but got through it with a sore throat, slight difficulty in swallowing , a rotten cough which was the worst part and minor reddening of the skin on my neck. The actual RT is painless and the dreaded “ mask “ you wear is not as bad as one might think. So, a few rough months perhaps ahead but with a bright light at the end of the tunnel. GOOD LUCK for tomorrow, let us know how you get on.

  • Thankyou so,so much for your uplifting response.Fabulous news on your recovery, and so very kind of you to share your own experience with me.I am so grateful to you and so happy you are where you are now .I shall update you on tomorrow and then the following Monday we have the Consultants and all results on the fluid from the lymph node ,tongue biopsy ct and mri scan.I shall move forward today taking your story with me and use that as a tool to mentally calm me and use my energy back to positivity at a scary time.Thankyou again for taking the time to contact me.I wish you continued good health and wonderful news on your recovery.Karen xx

  • Hi Karen

you are not rude at al lol and sie does take a bit of used to navigating around.

And to be clear you can ask me anything you like and I will share based on my own journery as the whole point is to try and help one another.
Please do keep in touch with me and you can chat away on a daily basis if you like or as frequent as you want to, and also request a friend if you would like private chat, but will leave that up to you.

So my treatment so far, I would say i'm coping ok and although there are side efects that kick in ( i start my final 6th week of treatment tomorrow), they are worth taking, as looking at a cure which is positive way im looking at. I have posted a weekly update here under living with cancer under heading "radiotherapy and Throat cancer" if you want to read, but on the whole I have coped ok with a lot of fantastic support from all the staff involved and well looked after.

Again if and when treatment starts for your husband you can speak with me on a daily basis if you like and can share any tips I can along with understanding what the 6 week treatment is like.We are all different and it various by individual on what side effects kick in and when, but maybe wait till definately told receiving treatment and I can go through in more detail, if that is what you would wish.

Am sorry to hear husband is still in pain and I would ask the consultant tomorrow to organise something to help cope with the pain, even before treatment, as he should not be suffering like that.
So you are getting biopsy etc done tomorrow, but have you been told how lonf results will be and potentially when treatment is to start.? If you are going with husband tomorrow, its a good idea to take a pen & paper as you may have some questions to ask that you might forget on the day and also take some notes down should you wish
You are right in as much that once you get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan then you are able , in my opinion, to deal with much better than the not knowing.
The treatment itself is painless and mask isnt too bad and you get used to it and its over very quick each day and approx 10 mins most, so bearable.
I am also here for you as well as it obviously effects partners/family as well and you are a vital cog in the journey as well with your husband.
Try and both stay as positive as possible and strong as possible and although you may well be facing some 6 weeks of radiotherpy, the success rate is very good and is highly treatable.

Please do keep in touch as you are not alone and there is a lot of support and advice here for you if you wish.

Best of luck for tomorrow and kind regards
    Ian

  • Thankyou so much for your support I cannot express what a relief itis to me to be able to share this nightmare.Iknow  in the bottom of my heart that it is the dreaded C too many things have happened and him being a smoker of 40 cigs a day for fifty years, you cannot walk away lightly.I will be in touch and give you the details as we further into the journey.I would love to message you as a friend and if god gave us a pass card on this one, which would be one in a million I shall stay in contact with this group as  if we were blessed with a positive result  I would pass out and I’d want a second opinion due to the things that have been happening.I will always be grateful for the response and support ,honesty and caring that I have received in a short while and will stay connected to help and support anyone that I can.I can’t thankyou enough,I’ll be in touch tomorrow.Take care love Karen xxxx

  • Morning lovely people.Just got back from the hospital, have left my husband there whilst he under goes the tongue biopsy on the mass at the back of his tongue and throat. The surgeon spoke to me and said unfortunately the fluids in his neck lymph node has come back positive so we have to wait for biopsy results and scans results they have changed the date to the 28th November now for a plan of action.Still terrified but you amazing people on here are keeping me sane and I will feel better when we know exactly what we are dealing with fully.Praying your all doing great and expressing my deep felt gratitude ️

  • Another delay.... seems to be pretty much the norm these days with the intense pressure on the NHS.Keep reminding yourself through the oncoming week that even if the eventual news is scary, as is all news where cancer is involved, neck and throat cancers are one of the easier ones to treat, invariably with a high percentage of success. I’m assuming that your husband has given up smoking....if not this will be hindering any progress to a massive degree. My vocal cord cancer was almost certainly caused by whisky drinking over a 50 year period, and, since my diagnosis a year ago, I’ve not touched a dram. Not much more can be said until you know what you’re up against. It’ll be a testing week.... we’re all rooting for you on here....
