I'm so worried, shadow on left lung

Hi all,

I'm not sure what I'm even asking here, I went to my doctor last week because I was just over the flu and was feeling so run down, tired, dizzy, headaches and my coordination when walking is brutal. My right leg has had a numb sensation for months but this was largely disregarded.

He listened to my chest, I've only a slight cough but he ordered a chest x-ray as my left lung didn't sound right. He rang a day later and told me I've a shadow on my lung and wanted me to go on stronger antibiotics as it could be a possible infection, then x-ray again in two weeks.

I've been on antibiotics a week now and feel no better, I don't have any of the usual chest infection symptoms but I have a constant headache and am as dizzy as before.

I don't have a huge amount of trust in my doctor and I Am worried that I'm just wasting time, of course I've googled and have self diagnosed myself with lung cancer that has spread to my spine or my brain as my symptoms match exactly. I've an ache in my upper back on the left side too, I didn't notice it was only in the left until last night, I've had it months but put it down to bad posture.

Im 35 and have five young children and am really scared that I'm just wasting my time with them, prancing around on unnecessary antibiotics when I could be preparing for the worst.

Should I go back tomorrow and ask for tests or wait it out and stop being dramatic?

  • Hello Mumof5.  Don't panic.  As someone who has had a fair amount of chest problems over the years, pulmonary TB, pneumonia (twice!) just for starters I have experienced many sensations in my lungs.    Antibiotics that didn't do anything; eventually ones that did.  Now as I am sure you now realise it was not wise to google your symptoms - it makes you wonder how on earth you are still alive.  I am reliably informed (by this forum) that all the symptoms of lung cancer can just as easily be the symptoms of many much lesser issues.  But  of course I don't actually know what is causing the symptoms you describe.  Nobody who posts here has medical training and even if we did  we certainly could not make guesses without a thorough examination.

Your options are (1) go back to your own doctor and tell him the antibiotics are making no difference to your symptoms.  Ask him about all the other symptoms also.  (2) If you don't want to go back to him is there another doctor you can see.  I don't know the nature of your GP practice.  Mine has about six doctors but I realise that yours may not be the same.  You can of course change your GP to another surgery but I don't know how long it takes. (3) go to a walk-in surgery - I live in London where a lot of the hospitals have this but again I don't know what it is like in your area.    I would return to my GP for starters for a full discussion.  If you are still dissatisfied then it may be time to change your doctor either within your surgery if possible (less hassle) or another surgery.

Incidentally I have all manner of  shadows and other things on my lungs but at 65 I am still pretty fit and walk a lot.  Best wishes.

  • Hi Annieliz

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it's much appreciated! I've an appointment tomorrow with a new GP,

Thank you for your reassurance, I will try and stay positive x

  • Hi Mumof5 just wondering how you got on at the doctors & how you are now? I’ve just been put on antibiotics for a week following a chest X-ray revealed a shadow on one of my lungs.
  • Hi QueenB not sure this chat is still active but I wondered how you got on with your health problems. I had an x-ray last Monday following chest pain and they found a shadow on my lung. Have just finished 7 days of antibiotics but still feeling ropey. I'm supposed to go back for a follow up x-ray in 6 weeks but in the meantime I'm a bit terrified! How are you now?

  • Hiya, I'm now an old dear but I have exactly the same as you are having. I've posted my greatgrand notice. I wish I was near you. I could give you a huge hug. As an oldie I don't like poking my nose in. How youngsters do things these days. Things are different now. But on saying that. I would love to tell you when you look back when you are my age. You will say 'yer: I did good then  Chin up sweetie sending love and huge hug xxx

  • Hi I’m very worried as I had sepsis in may and pneumonia, I came out of hospital bout 6 weeks agoI had two xrays one 29 th April and the other on 2nd may and i came out of hospital around the 6th may then last Wednesday I received a letter saying I have shadowing on my lung, I received letters for ct scan with the dye which I went for on Monday. And a letter for results on Thursday. It’s all happening to quick and I’m frightened it’s cancer. I was due to have an operation for gallstones on the 2nd may but I was in hospital .

  • Hi I went to go months ago fibbed me off with inhalers couldn’t walk without being breathless and sweating week later phoned a@e told me go straight to hospital was admitted with rare ohnuomonia on oxygen 3 days and I’v s had cracked and shadowing said couldn’t rule out cancer was devastated got discharged 2 days later saw gp sent me straight back got discharged again as I needed more anti biotics I went 6 weeks later for x ray said I’d here if there was any thing sinister showing up been 3 weeks now so I’m praying things have cleared

  • I had a chest xray yesterday due to being short of breath I'm 32 and a num if 3. I got a call from doctor this morning said my xray was potentially nornal and repeat xray in 8 weeks. This doesn't seem right shouldn't then be sending me for a ct scan instead of waiting all that time?  I hope you are doing well and all was okay for you

im going through the same thing. My chest X-ray showed I had a shadow ie mass on my left lung. Sounds like the X-ray person is not sure if he has found any thing, hence having to wait for another eight weeks just to see if it’s an infection. If any thing is found you will definitely be called up for a CT scan with in a couple of days. I am now on a roller coaster, ct, pet scan, brain scan all these test will be carried out with in two weeks. I can not fault the NHS, I live in Nottingham. Hope every thing is ok with your next X-ray.
