I need help

Hi my husband had rectal cancer and after operation to remove last dec he then got told on a routine ct during recovery after op that it spread to liver. After near 3 months of chemo and another ct got told chemo not worked at all and had spread more to both lungs. Was told chemo would now be palative and looking at not years survival rate.

Anyway my question is we had looked into canabis oil from a repitable supplier( I know it illegal but we have nothing to lose with trying it now) hes now taking a three month course and 3 weeks into it he is very unwell with the side effects. He now cannot hardly stand let alone move steps and I am struggling to cope on my own. I am so tired and physically worn out. Our kids visit an help as best as can but live 2hrs away so carnt be with us 24/7. I didnt want to have to ask for help but I just carnt cope anymore. Can I get any help from anyone if they know hes on this oil?

Please could some help. I just carnt cope alone anymore.

  • You need to contact your Mc Millan nurses and tell them about this.   Don't be worried about the oil, it was your choice, you need help so ask for it.  I hope you get some help soon.  Carolx

  • Hi Debra

My husband has just been told the chemo isn't working so have stopped it. Also told only a few months now. I am struggling to cope too Macmillan nurses coming on Monday but nobody can put themselves in our shoes. Is it worth carrying on with the oil if it is making him so bad. Maybe just control his pain and let things take their course. I know that sounds harsh but Don just wants to be left in peace now for as long as we can. Hope you feel Macmillan nurses help. It's lonely road we are walking at the moment. Sending hugs and love

    Sue

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear about your husband's situation. This must be both an emotional and physically draining time for you all.

While I cannot be sure why your husband is now so unwell, I do wonder if the cancer has progressed or if the cannabis oil is causing him to become unwell. I say this because, and I know you may find this upsetting to hear, there is currently no medical evidence to say that taking cannabis oil will help treating cancer.

And while you say that the company you are buying from is reputable, unless cancer treatment is from a registered hospital or oncology clinic it is not possible to say that any treatment from there is going to be useful and safe.

I am not sure if you are n the UK.  I'm afraid that I only know about community services in the UK, so if you are, I hope that your husband has been referred to a community palliative care team (often known as Macmillan Nurses) and /or community nursing support.  Sometimes this can come from a local hospice. In other countries there is hopefully a similar service.  Referral to these services are usually made by the GP (family Doctor) or the specialist cancer team in the hospital, in particular the clinical nurse specialist who is your husband's main point of contact.  If he has not been referred to this type of support please do ask his GP or nurse. We have information about the help you can have at home on our website, click here to see it.

Also I need to say that if you have not already done so please let your husband's doctor or nurse know that he is currently taking cannabis oil as this might affect any treatment he is on or explain why he has become unwell.  But please do not worry as your husband would not be denied help and support because he is taking it.

I hope this has helped. Please do get in touch with us if you need to and you would be very welcome to call us a call on our freephone number ( if in UK), it is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Caroline.
