I don't know what's the right decision to make

Hi I am a 52 year old with secondary breast cancer in my bones. Spinal cord  I have been on Letrizole for the last two years that has now started to fail. My cancer has now moved to my hip and sacrum. In April at my lowest point when I felt that the fight was too much I was changed from oxicontin and oxinorm to a pain relief patch (Fentanyl) that I change every seventy two hours. I was given this as the original pain relief wasn't working. My consultant has said that my treatment should change and has suggested Fulvestrant. He has always offered me a trial drug. Since my first diagnosis in 2013 I've waited for the option of a trial in the hope that it would help to slow my cancer down. The downside is ive been told that it isn't compatible with the pain patch. I would also have to wait around four weeks for the testing to see if I'm compatible for the trial and I've been told that I can't start my new cancer drug until then. I'm so frightened of not being on any active treatment I've been told my only option for pain relief would be to revert to OxyContin I could also end up just being given a placebo drug. I would really appreciate any any advice. Is it a risk to wait without treatment and am I being unrealistic in that I would have side effects to deal with from possibly two drugs. Hope that you are all as well as can be. Thank you

  • Hi Khack,

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself in and of the difficult decision you are facing so I just wanted to give you our cancer nurses telephone number as they will be the best people to talk this through with. Their freephone number is 0808 800 4040 and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. I have included some general information that we have on our website about Fulvestrant for you to read as well.

I know you're wanting some input from other members so now that I've replied I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Khack,

I wish I could help but this is way outside my experience. One of the downsides of any double-blind trial is that you might easily end up on a placebo, so effectively receiving no treatment. I can only sympathise with your dilemma.

    Best wishes
