Hysteroscopy procedure

Hi just wondering if anyone has had a hysteroscopy done before  for a removal of polyp in womb and how long did they have wait on the results? I was diagnosed with poly in womb Christmas time and the appointment is next month to have it removed. Slightly nervous of what is ahead of me!

  • Hi Joanne...Try not to worry, it’s really straight forward.. I’ve had this procedure done twice removing polyps both times. Last one was just after Xmas....it’s very quick and painless..I was put out both times and it takes roughly half hour being put out having them removed and coming back round and was home the same day. They said to make sure I have plenty of painkillers at home ready but on both occasions I didn’t need to use them as I had no pain. I received my results the same day too.

    I’m always here to chat

    Best wishes

    Tina

  • Thank you Tina. Did you know before the procedure they were putting you under General aesthetic. My letter doesn't say that it's just the appt for the clinic but I was told I would be awake so I am presuming this appt is to get it removed. You were lucky to get the results the same day. Does the sample not have to go to the lab to rule out cancer?

  • Hiya..I I had to see another Dr first who explained what it was etc and said that I will be put out (I know others that have stayed awake through it.. then a week after I had my pre op then 3 days after that I had the actual op..

After my op I stayed in the ward for a while then a Dr came round and said they removed polyps and were benign and other things that they checked were all ok and everything came back clear..Some hospitals may check them there and then like mine..others may send them off.

Has anyone spoke to you as what they are going to do?

    Tina.

  • Hi Joanne1611,

Hope you're not worrying too much! I just had a hysterescopy under GA today...I was back on the ward within the hour and have not had any pain! (They did kindly give me some paracetamol before I woke though plus anti-sickness medication which I imagine helped- mention to the anaesthetist when you have your pre-op chat). At home this evening, I haven't had to take any more medication (and I usually suffer with painful periods) so am pleasantly surprised as I was imagining the worst.

The doctor tells you the results straight after the op so there is no nail biting wait for results either.

I did originally try to have the procedure under just local anaesthetic but unfortunately they just couldn't gain entry (I haven't had any children so it's trickier to get in apparently)...again- that was just uncomfortable rather than painful for me too. They use a saline 'pump' (extremely gentle) to try and gain entry but couldn't get the hysterescopy through so I just ended up soggy!

I'm sure you will be fine...try not to worry - they will look after you and it will be over before you know it xx

  • Thank you. Had it done awake with no anaesthetic. It was the worst pain I have ever experienced! Was told it didn’t look nasty but they send it away anyways. Still waiting on the results but hopefully won’t be much longer.

  • Oh no Joanna1161 So sorry to hear it was really painful I'm sorry you weren't offered local anaesthetic either...I think it should be offered/administered to all as standard; just in case as it does seem to be 'hit or miss' whether it's painful or not sadly.

Hopefully you don't have a long wait for your result; then you can put this whole thing behind you.

    Take Care x

  • Hi did you have it done on the NHS. I'm looking for a privat hospital that does it.

  • Tina please can tell me if you donne histeroscopy to  nhs or private and in wich hospital please.Thank you.

  • Hiya...

I had my procedure done on the NHS but not sure you're allowed to mention hospitals on this site but it was a hospital within the London Borough of Bromley.

    Take care

  • I had mine done yesterday with polyp removals. I only took 2 paracetamols before. It wasn't painful, only a little bit of pressure with the water in and about 5 min of crampiness during the procedure.
