Husband has multiple cancers

HI, new to here...  My husband has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer (hormone treatment commenced yesterday) and bowel cancer (awaiting biopsy results and not yet met consultant).  Wondered if there is anyone else on here with experience of multiple cancers to give me some hope.  Have been up and down like yo-yo's.  My head is full of cancer stuff and what-ifs.  He looks completely 'normal', healthy and doesn't feel ill at all so it is all very surreal but we know we have a hell of a year or so ahead of us.  Thanks:-)

  • Hi Sussex Wife, I can't give you any advice unfortunately but hopefully someone else will be able to so thought I'd answer your post to put it back at the top.  So sorry your husband is going through this and you to X

  • Sussexwife

Just wanted to say hello and welcome to the chat board

I dont have experiencce of multiple cancers ( are they both primary?) but sounds like the prostate cancer is being dealt with and waiting to see with the bwel cancer. Waiting for results is very difficult.

At least when you have results you know what you are dealing with and until then your head just runs riot. However I would advise against googling and looking up on the net as really it tends to be very scary and may not even be relevant. Hopefully someone will come along with similiar experiences to you who can advise you better

I know it is a very worrying time, but if your husband is feeling healthy and well I would say just try and enjoy some nice times with him.Do some nice things together, day trips, whatever you both enjoy doing.

Let us know how you get on

  • Hi Sussex wife,

The moderators asked me to post.  Unfortunately a person can be diagnosed with two different types of primary cancer.  This might be at different times in their life, or more unusually at the same time.  I appreciate it can be hard to come to terms with one diagnosis, so having news about two different diagnoses must be quite overwhelming.

I hope you don¿t mind me suggesting to take just one day at a time.  I¿m sure the two consultants will discuss your husband¿s situation and how the treatment can be coordinated.  You may feel a bit more settled once you have seen both consultants, had the opportunity to ask questions and your husband has a treatment plan mapped out.

If you are looking for information about bowel cancer and prostate cancer, we have information on CancerHelp UK, just click on the highlighted words.

I hope someone else in a similar situation is able to post and let you know about their experiences.  In the meantime if you would like to talk things through, you are very welcome to telephone the information nurses on 0808 800 4040 (open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).

    Take care,

    Helen

  • Just wanted to say a heartfelt 'thank you' to all who replied (even though you have no personal experience - you still held out a hand).  Also to Nurse Helen for comforting words and listening xx

  • I was diagnosed with lung cancer April 2019, and this year, july, with bladder cancer, very overwhelming but trying to remain upbeat, both cancers not connected
  • Hi Gordon,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to read what you are going through at the moment.

I just wanted to send a reply to say that it looks like the person you are replying to hasn't been active on the forum for quite a while now, and this thread is several years old.

You may still receive replies here, but if not then you may wish to create your own new thread on the forum to encourage replies that way.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hello Gordon, looks like I'm in a similar position been fighting bile duct cancer in liver since last August now appear to have bowel cancer as well.  Someone doesn't like me.

  • Hi Wendy, I just came across this post after doing some online research in relation to my dad.

how are you coping since your diagnosis? How are you now?

my dad was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and thymus cancer, both separate and non-connected. It's hard finding anyone else out there going through a similar situation.

  • Hi

I was diagnosed with Breast cancer and then 5onths later double kidney cancer..all primary tumours. I am still here nearly 7 years later.

  • Hi

I have been living with two cancers, Chronic Lymphotic Leukaemia and Prostate Cancer for 2 years now after surviving extremely severe COVID I am still feeling fit and well although I do get tired.

All I can say is stay positive, you come to terms with your cancers and try to get on with your life it's is important for your own and your loved ones well being.

Yes the thought of the cancers are always there but enjoy each day as it comes and most importantly be kind to yourself.

I hope to keep this attitude on life going forward particularly as I am awaiting a biopsy for potential pancreatic cancer.

My best advice is to keep your spirit up and live life!!
