Hpv positive result

Hi all

Im 27 and had my first smear test Monday 7th October. I received my results today in the post which confirmed that I had no abnormal cells but I tested positive for HPV and they want me to go back in 12 months for another smear test.

To be honest the letter didn’t really explain much didn’t state if I was low risk or high risk. I am now really worried thinking that 12months is to long to wait for another test wouldnt this just give the HPV time to create abnormal cells. I have googled a lot about it ( I know I shouldn’t) but everything is so conflicting and I’m so confused .

I have also had symptoms for quite a while now like. Bleeding during and after sex, pain during sex, abnormal smelly discharge which is really worrying. I am going to try And get an appointment with my GP next week to explain my symptoms and to discuss my results. Is anyone on the forum going through something similar to me? I would really appreciate any advice you can give me.

I have also been with my fiancé for 8 years I know that HPV can lie dormant for many years but I’m worried that it will cause him issues or if I get the all clear in 12 months is it going to Be a a vicious circle passing it back and forth to each other? I’m so sorry for the long message but I’m going out of my mind with worry and have so many questions please help!!

Thank you

  • Hello Chelsea,

Firstly no abnormal cells is good. Secondly HPV is really common lots of us have it or have had it at some time or another. Mostly it clears up by itself within 12 months - hence the 12 month re-test. Please try not to worry I tested positive for HPV and had abnormal cells too. I had a re-test after 6 months and all was fine! Then another after 12 which was normal. That was 15 years ago and every test since has been normal. I think going to your GP is a good idea for your peace of mind, especially as your experiencing other symptoms,   plus she can explain the results to you better.

    Hope your feeling better soon

thank you so much for your reply. It’s nice to know your not the only one going through these things and so many other women are In the same boat. I’m so happy that you got the all clear and continue to do so. You definitely have put my mind at ease. And I’m going to stay off google from now on haha. I am going to get into my GP sometime next next week. Thanks again for your reply Rae
