HPV Positive no abnormal cells

Hello

Im 38 years old I recently had my smear test and received my results saying I'm HPV positive with no abnormal cells. The first thing I did was research on the internet, I know it's not the right thing to do but I needed more information.
I didn't know anything about HPV or it's link to cancer not just cervical but oral cancer. I've been suffering with a sore throat, hoarseness and constantly clearing my throat for about a month and now I'm convinced I've got throat cancer. I went to the doctors yesterday and the dr said I've got streaks on my tonsils and a swollen gland so he's given me antibiotics to take.
The information I've read on the internet says it can take 10 years for cancer to develop and I think what if I've had HPV for 10 years already.
I'm sorry if I've got any information wrong I'm just so confused and anxious.

Thank you x

  • Hello Sonny38

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious at the moment following your recent cervical screening results. It's fairly common for women to be told they are HPV positive but we know that many, many women find this news upsetting and it can lead to all sorts of emotions.

There's lots of reliable information about HPV on the Jo's Trust website and I'd really encourage you to contact either their helpline or to call our team of nurses on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) to talk your concerns through with someone. I'm sure they will be able to give you some clarification and reassurance about things.

In the meantime keep taking the medication that the GP has given you and I do hope that things settle for you in the coming days.

    Best wishes,
