How to say goodbye

My dad passed away 3 weeks ago. It's been the worst experience of my life.

I went to the chapel of rest and have since visited 3 times. I am going today. How do I say goodbye?

it's his birthday tomorrow and I'm heading home (2 hours away) tonight. The funeral is in 5 days time.

I know I need to say goodbye and not go back. However he looks lovely.

I know I need to live and allow him to rest but we were so close and I miss him so much. Yesterday I played music and said goodbye now I feel that I must say goodbye to him and do something nice on his birthday.

any advice?

  • Hi Mands

You could say we are sadly in the same boat, I lost my Dad a month ago and I am struggling too. I am so sorry for you, it is just about the worst thing anyone can go through there's no point in lying about that.

I only got to see my Dad the once in the Chapel of Rest before we buried him due to timing with the funeral but that was enough for me. Whilst he looked ok and restful he didn't look like the man I remember. Perhaps you could write a letter and leave it with him on your last visit so you don't miss anything out you may want to say.

It's just goodbye in the physical sense, it's not goodbye to who he was, still us to you or what he has taught you. You hold on to those memories.

I was very close to my Dad too, he was my friend, confidant and absolute rock and I feel like I'm lost in space without him. I'm just trying to think he is not in pain anymore and he is at peace.

    Big hugs to you xx

  • Hello Mands111

I am so sorry for your loss, I too lost my only brother on Feb 14th to Lung Cancer I will lay his ashes to rest on 9th April, I too feel the same about saying goodbye, I think if you can think of the good times and memories that you have, perhaps it will ease your pain a little. That's what I will try on the 9th.  Sending you strength.
