How long for post-surgery breast cancer treatment

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal breast cancer (and pagets disease) 6 weeks ago and had a mastectomy to remove a 65mm tumour 3 weeks ago. 

I saw the oncologist last week, who said he wanted to do an oncotype test to determine whether I would benefit from chemo. This is fine, I'm just not sure why is wasn't done 3 weeks ago immediately following surgery as its now looking like I'll be 6 weeks post-mastectomy before I know my treatment plan, let alone start it. Is this normal, it's seems like a long time?

Hi Pippy, I'm not too sure but this is what I think has happened: After your surgery, the tissue removed would have been sent to pathology for testing which can take two weeks or more. They now want to do the oncotype DX test. Have a look at this link and especially the third point, which I think explains it well

this also happened to me I waited 6 weeks to see my oncologist then I asked for oncotype which was another wait I can see your point why don't they do it immediately after surgery 

however I was happy with Oncotype score and no chemo required .

Hiya,

I'm 6 weeks post mastectomy on Friday.

I'm waiting for my Onco result and should find out my result on Thursday.

It will be 3 weeks since my follow up where they suggested it was sent off to California where they test it. That was my decision when asked if I wanted a lymph node clearance I opted to get the test.

I'm assuming based on my call on Thursday they will refer me to the treatment department and I'll start treatment soon after maybe a couple of weeks.

It is a bit of a odd time as you feel OK but can't really plan anything and don't know what to expect from your treatment.

it's a nightmare waiting but the Oncotype is a very good test I think when you get result yard no where you are going it will be worth the wait I do understand as you can't plan anything I spent that time buying wigs getting my brows microbladed ect then it was a waste of money scire was low no chemo required

Hi Pippy14, I hope your not waiting as long as me. 13 weeks post op today. 3 weeks more to see oncologist, I am told another couple of weeks for planning scan. Then another couple before radiotherapy. I was 12 weeks till surgery . So long started with GP back in September. Its ? MAY until the end. So short of surgeons, strikes, apparently very busy.I am in Scotland. Wish you luck. Pip
