Hospice nurse coming in at night

Hi,

So I haven't posted much on this forum, but when I did in the 'introduce yourself' section, I got some very supportive and helpful responses.

My dad has been in the terminal phase for a while. They still cannot say how long he has left, but even 3 weeks ago, the Macmillan nurse was saying 'any week'.

He is being cared for by is current wife at home.

I just learned that as of next week, a hospice nurse will be coming in at night - exact date to be confirmed.

Is this more of a sign that the end is near? It's been very hard for me to gauge and prepare with all the 'not knowing' and I'm wondering if anybody can give me some insights into what stage they tend to offer this service?

Thank you!

Emily

  • Hi Emily

I wanted to reach out to you, my Dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer late July, he evetually started chemo and the second cycle made him seriouisly ill, he has now been sent home to the care of Macmillan nurses and my brave mum, they can do no more for him,

It's happened so fast, and he's already on morphine - I understand your world entirely, I have no idea what to expect  or how long, at work I am agreeing to going out site meetings and allsorts and I don't know if I should be because I don't know when something might happen.

    It's a complete limbo isn't it!

  • Hi Jules,

Yes, I feel totally in limbo. On the one hand I want to go home again to see my dad, but then I don't know when/if to go (I'm a 7.5 hour flight away).

I, too, am keeping my weekends freer 'just in case'.

I understand my dad has also been having minor hallucinations - from what I read, that happens in the last 2 weeks, but again, not sure.

Very diffcult indeed - thinking of you too!

    Emily x
