High platelet count in blood results and not anemic

Hi!

I dont know if anyone can help me...I had a blood test on 21/11/19 (just a full blood count) as I need to be re referred for my PCOS and I recieved a call on monday 25/11/19 saying the Dr wanted to see me with regards to my results and when I asked what it was for spcifically, they said it was for a high platelet count. My mum is an RGN and she is a little concerned and said it should be investigated due to its link to cancer and other issues. I then called the surgery back to see if I could have a phone appointment to shed a little light on the situation, they got the nurse to call me.

The nurse was as helpful as she could be but couldnt give me much information excpet I am not anemic and she said I needed to talk to the Dr. But she did say I have had high levels of platelets in every blood test I have had since 2014 and its never been mentioned or investigated! I am now worried the Dr will wave the issue away and say its nothing to worry about (which is what they said about my PCOS and I am now habvving huge issues with it!) and I want to find out why I have had raised platelets for such a long time! Is it common to have raised platelets constantly? Could there be an underlying problem? I am 24 years old and I do have a family history of Cancer.

Any advice, questions to ask my Doctor or reassurance would be most welcome!

Thanks :)

  • Hi elliede,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Since the doctor wants to see you again, hopefully they will talk things through with you and not wave anything away. It sounds like you have good awareness now of the situation, so with this in mind make sure you make a note of any questions you have and take these to the doctor. It may also be helpful to make notes during the appointment. It's important that you're fully informed so do make sure you get all the answers you need.

If you would like to discuss anything with our nurses before your appointment to help you with any additional questions, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hello.

I know your post was a couple of years ago but I was wondering if you got any answers regarding your high platelet count? I too have been told I have a higher than normal platelet count and have done for at least 2 years. Previous doctors have never raised the issue with me but I recently changed doctors and my new GP has said that I need to have another blood test, which I'm having in 2 days time. I'm very worried as I've been suspecting that I have cancer for a while now and this has not helped my anxiety. I too have PCOS (I was diagnosed when I was 15) but the doctor said she doesn't think it would cause raised platelets. I also have been getting a pain in my right side (under my ribs) which feels like a stitch. I also get painful lymph nodes behind my ears. I've had all these symptoms on and off for a couple of years now and the doctors just don't seem concerned at all. My GP has said that if my platelets are still high after the next blood test, she will refer me to a phlebotomist for further tests but I'm absolutely petrified. I've developed a cough during the last couple of weeks and I'm convinced there's something sinister going on.

Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks.

  • Hello

i have suffered with low level high platelets for several years. I now see a haematologist every 6 months to have bloods checked. They have tried to find a cause but haven't been able to. I was really worried initially but have researched and do feel much happier about it. I take an aspirin daily and I am trying to keep healthy and not put on wait etc. The haematologist is really reassuring so I just try to get on with my life. Platelets lowest in 2 years today!!! Yippee
