Hi, currently going through treatment for rectal cancer

Hey, just wanted to introduce myself and read others stories.

I am currently going through treatment for rectal cancer.  I was symptom free and oblivious and thankfully due to our fantastic screening prog starting at 50 it was picked up. Originally i was told it was just the op I needed but as tests and scans came back i ended up having five sessions of radiotherapy , the op with an ileostomy (reversible hopefully) and now chemo.  The chemo was delayed for a few weeks as it was thought my cancer had spread but thankfully a pet scan showed that not to be the case.

Started Oxaliplatin and Capecitabine and apart from the pains in my hands im doing really well, only day two so not counting my chickens just my blessings!

Feel like ive hit every hurdle on the way but the light is at the end of the tunnel - distant but its there!!

I previously had breast cancer in my 30s around 16years ago. Life just has to go in with a smile as you can.  My motto is "Just keep swimming"

  • Hello Jynx1966,

Thank you for sharing your story - I love your motto "just keep swimming" it will be inspirational to many who are currently facing similar challenges and going through chemotherapy treatment at the moment. You are right to focus on these lights at the end of the tunnel, you've probably seen these before when you had breast cancer 16 years ago.

I am glad the PET scan revealed that your cancer hadn't spread you must have felt so relieved when you received the results. It's great too that your treatment is going well and you are suffering very few side effects. You might be interested in reading more about chemotherapy for rectal cancer and you can find out more information about it on this page. You can also find more details about XELOX (the oxaliplatin and capecitabine drug combination) here

I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited your title to include the words 'currently going through treatment for rectal cancer' - this will allow others to spot your post more easily and hopefully increase the chances of it being seen by someone who has also been diagnosed with the same cancer and who has been receiving the same treatment. I hope you will soon hear from others who are in the same boat and who can relate to how you are feeling at the moment.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Lucie  I'll check out your links. The edit is fine, the more people who see and feel like chatting is fine with me

I actually have a tattoo of Dory (my kids call.me that) with Just keep swimming written underneath.  I got it after a cataract op went badly wrong.  Broke me more than any cancer has so far I'll tell you.

    Just keep swimming people xxxx
