Helping to cope with the fact my nan has uterus cancer.

Hi this is going to be a bit of a long post but I'm really struggling with the fact my nan has uterus cancer.

It first started in her bowel she had to have the majority of her bowel removed. A hysterectomy and something to do with polyps :/ this was all done at the same time. It took 10 hours and in recovery when tubing was removed she stopped breathing but she was put back on the tubes and it was a longer recovery but she done it.

Anyway 2 days ago now we had a phone call to say she has uterus cancer sarcoma I dont know what this is or if i lve said it right and I'm getting mixed things on Google. All I know is its a very rare cancer!

She's been told she has to have chemo but has to have it quite far away from where we live due to it being rare.

I'm struggling so bad to come to terms with this. My nan is my bestfriend and I really don't want to lose her . Does anyone have advice please. Please help!

  • Hello Sophie993

I am sorry to hear about your gran. Poor her it does sound like she had major surgery it must have been a very scary time for you then but I am glad she made it and recovered despite everything she went through after the operation.

It seems that your gran's cancer is indeed rather rare. Try not to look things up too much on Google - as you have discovered it will bring up mixed results and you may end up even more confused about everything. Try and stick to sources that you know are reliable. For example, you can find out more about uterine sarcoma (also known as sarcoma of the womb) here . From looking at our information on the different types of womb cancer, it looks like there are various different kinds with confusingly similar names - for example there is uterine sarcoma but also uterine carcinosarcoma so try and find out exactly what the terminology is in your gran's case. If you want to have a chat with our cancer nurses about this, don't hesitate to give them a call and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can reach them on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope the chemotherapy treatment goes well for her - it is a shame that she is having to have it far away and I hope someone is able to take her there.

You have come to the right place to talk to others who also have a grandparent or a parent who has been diagnosed with a rare cancer and I am sure someone will be along soon to share their own story with you and give you some tips to help you cope in the coming days and weeks.

    Best wishes,
