Help,in need of information

My mum was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer 12 weeks ago,she started having chemo within about 4 weeks of being diagnosed she's had 3 so far and is aparantly responding well, however she was supposed to have her 4th chemo tomorrow but it's been postponed, the reason being is her recent ct scan results have come back and show an area at the top of her left lung ( where the small cell cancer first started) a new shadowy area has suddenly appeared which wasn't there on her last ct scan.As you can imagine we are completely panicked and worried that it is a secondary cancer, she is having the strongest chemo mix there is which has clearly shrunk the cancer in her lungs, chest, liver and lymphnodes so how can it be possible that a new cancer/growth has now appeared? My mums doctors are have a meeting on Tuesday morning then meeting with us Tuesday afternoon, until then we have an agonising wait ,we are terrified there going to tell us even more unbearable news,we've searched the Internet looking for answers but can't find any thing ,is there any one out there that has experienced this same thing? And if so what does it mean? Does it mean my mum has developed a new cancer? Is that possible whilst having chemotherapy? Could this be an infection? Could it be something very serious?have no clue,Please, if any one can shed any light on this please get in touch ....we are already on borrowed time with my mum,she was only given a few weeks to live initially and so far has lasted 3 months and generally she feels well but this latest news has knocked us completely and we can't find any information anywhere. Many thanks in advance  x

  • Hi Wendy,

I'm afraid that I can't directly answer any of your questions as I'm a cancer patient rather than a doctor. That said, it is possible to have two primary cancers but it is unusual. Talk to her care team and ask what else the shadow could be. I'd be guessing if I were to try to answer this part of your message.

Great news that the chemo is having such a good effect on your Mum's cancer, not all of us have such a good response :-)

I hope someone else can give you a better answer!

    Best wishes

    Dave
