Help Lung cancer diagnosis whilst in Germany on holiday

Hi its my first time on here. Sorry, its a bit rambly as still in shock.

We booked our holiday months ago to Germany to visit family and friends. Hubby felt poorly and visited doctors many times but was told its probably just an infection and was given antibiotics. He is 61 and usually a really fit guy. We live in London.

On the 4th day into our holiday hubby had such pain in his shoulder and chest that I took him to A&E.  After a few basic test a stay of a day or two morphed into a week soon and longer as they have now found cancer in the lung and other parts like kidneys and the ribs. He also started spitting blood and has black stools whilst in hospital. So it just started. He is very short of breath. They think its the small celled and very agressive cancer type. We can stay in Germany indefinitely with family but we do need to get back eventually.

Right now he is getting a stent to an artery or vein near his heart as his head and arms have ballooned whilst in hospital. The tumor is wrapping round the artery or vein and they want to free it up.

The EHIC covers the treatment. My problem is how can I get him back to the UK into a hospital in London?

I have contacted a hospital in London but no joy as yet but then its weekend now.

Has anyone got any experience in getting a patient back into a UK hospital? He may not need a bed but would need regular chemotherapy.

Right now the German doctors said no traveling of any kind. We drove over as we do every year. I can drive him home thats not a problem. We are ex-forces and here to visit his old mates that stayed here.

My concern is getting him continued care and chemo in UK.

My mind is all over the place. His job, my job. But more worried about him.

I called our surgery in London but they literally said nothing to do with them as long as he is abroad. In fact they blocked his account and won't issue his eye drops for glaucoma to my daughter as she is flying over tomorrow to be with her dad as a moral support. They said its hospital to hospital transfer only, but would not even suggest a hospital to me.

I would be grateful for any insights or tips. Has anyone moved from abroad to UK for cancer treatnent when they were on holiday?

  • Oh so sorry you are going through this really difficult time at the mo and I don't know how to advise but just to say I hope you get home soon and sending you a big hug and keeping my fingers crossed for you ️ It's true there's no place like home , especially when you go through what you are xx

  • Use your insurance which I hope you have. My husband once had St John's ambulance fly to Spain and travel back with us and then they took us home in an ambulance as he didn't need any more treatment.I was then able to see his GP who followed up everything from Spain and eventually we were told he had MS.

    Hope things improve soon.x
