Help and Advice for Colon / Bowel Cancer

Hi,

My Nan has been battling cancer for a while now. She has colon cancer. We have received the news that it is terminal and inoperable. I hate seeing my Nan suffer and seeing her in so much pain. She is struggling to eat and a lot of the pain relief medicine the hospital are giving her aren't always helping.

She is managing to drink water and have about half a slice of toast a day at the moment, otherwise she is violently sick. I would really appreciate if someone could recommend any foods/drinks that she could try (nothing too heavy)?

Also, if anyone could recommend anything to help with pain relief (e.g. breathing exercises) and helping her sleep I would be very grateful!

Thanks in advance

  • Hello Seasider1,

I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to our forum although I'm sorry for the reasons that bring you here.

I can't recommend any foods or drinks you nan could try, but I had a look on our website and found some information on breathing exercises and on diet in advanced cancer.

Also, if you feel like talking to someone on the phone might help we have a team of nurses available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, which is free to call from a UK landline, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    I hope this helps Seasider1.

    Warm wishes,

  • Hello Seasider1, sorry to hear about your nan. It is horrible to see someone you love being in pain and I know only too well this feeling of being helpless as my husband is also in the late stages of bowel cancer (now spread to his liver and peritoneal area).

My husband is now hardly eating anything and doesn't drink much either. Until last week, the only thing he would eat was noodles (the dry packet type of noodle, not the fresh ones). But he has now gone off that too and yesterday he had a little tomato soup only.

I have ordered some more bottles of Fortisip that he used to have after his initial operation last year. It's a complement food drink and it comes in different flavours. Your GP should be able to prescribe some to your nan if you ask for it.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your reply. I will have a look at the links!

  • Hi Froggybinou,

I am so sorry that you're going through this too. It's awful seeing them in so much pain and not being able to do anything to help!

It seems they are both struggling to eat anything heavy, and sometimes even the thought of eating can cause feelings of sickness!

Thank you so much for recommending that, I will definitely tell her about them and see if it's something she thinks she can manage.

    Thanks again for your help,

    Stay Strong!
