Hello! Newly diagnosed, feeling optimistic

Hiya,

Was diagnosed today with breast cancer, awaiting ct scan results to see if it's spread. Consultant has said because i am under 40 they'll be going with chemo rather than surgery. Feeling optimistic and hopeful right now but sure that will ebb and flow!

  • Hi there and welcome ...

There's a lot of us breast lasses on here ... your in good company and its always good to feel positive .. though your right it's like a rollercoaster... lots of ups and downs .. but just go with whatever your feeling at the time ...

I had a grade 3 lump ... and a total right masectomy in July 2017 ...  and yet still here doing o.k ... I just looked at it like a boxing match .. got some vertual boxing gloves and got in the ring with it .. looked it in the eye .. and got ready to punch it right back ... it may knock us down at times .. but it's about getting back up and punching it back again ...

So if you have any questions or just want to chat or vent .. feel free ... Chrissie xx

  • Thanks both! I have a 2 year old son so that's the most terrifying aspect, it seems absolutely absurd that i should be going through this now! 4am seems to be my new wake up time (thanks anxiety) but thank goodness for kicking into mummy mode when my boy wakes up - jolts me into normal!

  • Hi Emsy. Hope you are well. Can i ask how old you are? I was under the impression its rare for those under 40 to get BC

  • Hi, yes I am 38 but my maternal grandmother had it at 42 and again at 52 so awaiting results of genetic testing to see if it's bad genes or coincidence. I have Her2+ which isn't associated with faulty genes so who knows!

It's been a roller coaster, i was told it had spread to my liver and therefore incurable, but following additional scans they're now not convinced it has spread to my liver (won't be confirmed until i have completed chemo in November) so looking at curative treatment of mastectomy and radiotherapy. Will be gruelling but if suspicions are correct about my liver I will take it over the original prognosis!!

Just had the 4th of sixth round of chemo and although not been plain sailing it has been easier than i anticipated. I am still chunky, cold cap has worked, meds for side effects work and knackered in the first week but i consider myself very fortunate really!
