Hello from a new member of the club

Hello.  I was diagnosed with DCIS a couple of months ago. I have been told that surgery is my only option (other than doing nothing) and have had three breast biopsies. I will be getting the results of the last one when I see my consultant tomorrow when it will be decided what sort of surgery will be best. Either a partial or full mastectomy. My initial thoughts when I was first diagnosed was to have a full one and just get rid of the cancer but when I first saw the consultant and she tool me I couldn't have an implant and would have to have a flap reconstruction it sounded a horrendous operation with a longer recovery than a partial so it now depends on what they found on the third biopsy as to whether I have a choice or not. I have been putting on a brave face but am truly terrified of the whole thing and will be walking into the consultants room tomorrow with lead in my feet.

  • Hello willowcat, so sorry for what you are going through, I truly am.  All of us on this forum (me included) know exactly how you feel.  Waiting to see the consultant and finding out what comes next is, as you say, terrifying.  Good luck for tomorrow, and if you are able to, let us know here on the forum how things went.  Violet, x

  • Hi Violetgirl. Thankyou for your kind wishes and getting in touch. I saw the consultant today - I really like her and feel very confident - however still no decision made as to what surgery I'm in for. I have a consultation with the plastic surgeon tomorrow to discuss things. In the meantime my breast surgeon is having her weekly meeting with the other surgeons and my case will be discussed to see if they think a partial mastectomy is viable. She is ringing me on Friday for a telephone consultation so I only have a couple of days to wait. That would be my choice but I can only be guided by her and what will be will be. Fingers crossed. Willowcat x

  • Hi willowcat, I hope so much that you will get the treatment that is your preference, but as you say, what will be will be, thank you for letting us know how it went, and also it is good that you have a consultant that you like and feel confident with.......that can make all the difference to being able to cope with this awful cancer journey, good luck mate, Violet, x
